Cheap Breakdown Cover

Featured Replies

I've just bought what I would consider pretty cheap breakdown cover from Green Flag, so thought I'd stick it on here.

It's not for my Superb (which is still on SUK cover), but for a 2006 vintage motor. They offer £50 cashback when you click through Quidco to get a quote and buy. You obviously need a Quidco account (charge is £5/year), and you also need it set-up to pay your cashback by BACS. The quote I got was just under £70 for 1-year cover for "Recovery Plus" spec. It is their all-singing/all-dancing spec for UK-only motoring. I expect the cashback to come after 3 months of the policy being live.

Taking the cashback into account, that makes it <£20/yr. So I thought worth sharing with my fellow Briskodians...

Direct Line (who also use Green Flag) also have a £25 cashback offer through Quidco. A like-for-like offer from DL is £115, making it £90/yr for the exact same level of cover.

The only way I can make sense of it is it seems as if GF are offering 50% off online, as well the £50 cashback.

I did a similar thing with AA last year (similar cover level as GF), and bought at £110 plus £60 cashback. So that was £50 net - difference was that covered me in any car.

You've got to love cashback sites. I did the same sort of thing with RAC last year. Just to add that the £50 Green Flag cashback is also on Topcashback, who don't charge £5/year. I'm always wary of companies that charge joining fees and admin fees to get you to be a customer. Probably why I've never joined a gym...

My quidco account is a hangover from my egg credit card days. I got £150 total in cash back last year, and £140 year before that, so the £5/yr to quidco doesn't bother me. Not bad for just an extra couple of clicks of the mouse each time...

From memory quidco take the first £5 of cash back each year, so if you don't buy anything, then no charge (IIRC).
