Also, shall I stick with DSG, or return to manual? 50/50 if I change car at mo!!

I would guess that they will drive quite differently. Looking in the Yeti section should give you some useful information-looks like it works well in that model with DSG, though that may not be the case in the octy. Personally I'd recommend you have an extended test drive using it in similar situations that you intend using it for including having the same number of passengers in the car. That way you'll fnd if it meets your requirements as everybodies varies. Remember to reset the fuel consumption too so you can see what mpg you get.

Hope this helps

The 1.2tsi is a new generation engine - new golf/leon/octavia; it has received good reviews in the motoring press - a little sharper than the present one in my Fabia and the cooled exhaust should help fuel economy and protect the turbo. tsi engines pull from low revs so feel like a bigger engine (or diesel but quieter).

I understand the new Octavia is upto 95kg lighter so should be lighter than a Yeti?

I love my dsg but you probably need to do quite a few miles to make the sums add up for diesel.

Good luck!

Andy.

Is the DSG available with this engine?

DSG is available from week 22 I think ( mid may) with is the start of the 2014 model year

In my sons MkII Octavia Estate the 1.2Tsi is much quieter and refined than the 1.6CR, returns low 40's around town and low 50's on longer runs. Pulls strongly. When I test drove the 1.2Tsi against the 1.6CR, the diesel engine had the pull of a wet lettuce until it got to 2000 rpm whereas the 1.2Tsi was much more tractable over a wider range of revs.

However......

The MK3 1.2Tsi is a completely different engine - it is the new modular design EA211. Bears little similarity to the 1.2Tsi in the MK2 - it even has a belt driven camshaft (was chain). It is significantly more efficient and combined with a much lighter chassis, economy on the MK3 is greatly improved. It is, as yet, unproven.

Current one is a great engine in the Fabia and I have heard good things here on the Yeti forum and in the Octavia 2 but I was unaware that the new Octy motor is new considering that the 1.2 TSI is hardly an old engine.

EDIT:

Yup new engine also being developed and built by Skoda. Here is an article on it. i think going from a chain to belt (unless maintenance free or very long life) is a retrograde step though.

Despite plumping for the 1.6TDI I was very impressed by the 1.2TSI, even in year 2010 spec.

It literally "drove like a diesel" and i was then comparing it to the ledgendary 1.9TDI with the VVturbo.

Still pleased with the 1.6TDI, but would not bad-mouth the TSI on performance grounds leastwise.

and i cannot comment re the likely fuel consumption for the 1.2 TSI

Been very impressed with the performance and flexibility of the 'current' 1.2TSI in 85/86PS guise; now on our second Fabia with the engine. However fuel consumption has never quite lived up to expectations, with low to mid 40's being the best we've managed with both cars, undertaking mainly rural A road driving.

Be interesting to see how this more advanced motor compares and if the economy has truly improved, as IMO the new Octy III with the baby TSI looks a good ownership proposition and I might be tempted in a couple of years when the design has had chance to mature a little.

Oh meant to ask if anyone can say if the new EA211 1.2TSI is 8 or 16v. Images I've seen suggest it's switched to the 4 valve per cylinder arrangement but the could be 'library' images of the 1.4 version.

Hang on guys a 1.2 in an Octavia...? Isnt that a little er... underpowered?

Well it isn't in the current one nor the yeti and this new one is around 100kg lighter!

I cant imagine it. Maybe I am out of Date but when I hear 1.2 I think Fiesta not Sierra. I know they made a 1.3 Sierra (Laughs) I had a 1.6 Sierra for 3 months and moved up to the 2.0L Sierra which was adequate. I always think Sierra and Octavia are almost the same size...?

^ +1 Lee.

Regularly jump in our 1.2 DSG and it's very impressive.

New Octavia should be even better - if not 140 horses in the 1.4.

Size wise, probably about the same, but what was the horsepower on the Sierra (80?), all the new engines are TSI rather than straight 8 or 16v lumps, a lot more responsive.

IIRC Autoexpress did a comparison a few years back with the Octavia 1.2 Estate and Focus 1.6 and the Octy left it for dust in all departments.

Works really well in the yeti. My 1.2 is a lot more responsive than the 1.9 tdi audi my wife had till recently. She swapped that for a golf with the 1.2 tsi too

I'd say its not even to do with its power, more so with the torque it has. And it's accessible from very lowdown the rev range. A very capable little engine IMO opinion and the Octy gets the next generation of it also! :)

Thanks for your replies, sounds like a great engine, I have the 1.6 tdi cr in my octy, & I'm getting 43.4 mpg on average, but do a lot of short journeys.

Nearly ordered today, but the car I specified, was coming out more than the Elegance!! Dealer trying to lead me to having the Elegance, talks to continue on 17th March.

when new car will be available to test drive.

I specified, a 1.2Tsi se with winter pack, cruise, satnav, parking sensors, colour maxi dot & blue tooth, in Race Blue.

Dealer suggests a 1.6Tdi Elegance, as I'd get everything but the winter pack, & would pay less, but add the winter pack & I would pay more!!

An elegance may be may have better residuals than a highly specced SE but you should pick the car that suits your requirements best. Have you thought of the 1.4 elegance it ll cheaper than a 1.6 Tdi ? I'm swapping to one from a CR vRS and the reported performance/ economy figures are very close.

Sounds like a 1.4TSI Elegance is worth a look.

It will be nicer to drive than the 1.6 TDI and will have much better residuals than an SE with all the options ticked.

That's what I said...lol

So you did!

We must be right then! ;)

The 1.2Tsi isn't available as an Elegance, the 1.4Tsi I was leaning toward, but to make the numbers work, the 1.6Tdi is my best option. I have that engine at present with DSG gearbox,

so I'm going for the 1.6Tdi with a manual gearbox, placed the order yesterday with Vindis Skoda Cambridge, Race Blue!!
