Shell fuel?

Featured Replies

Really??? i instantly knew it wasnt filled with v-power or tesco 99 when i asked the mrs about it, just seemed less sharp as it used to then she confessed it was Asda's plain 95ron fine if your not turbo'd etc its an ok fuel it meets spec but it has zero detergents or higher octane.

Seems fine to me......but, I drove a diesel for 5 years!!!

To be honest I haven't done the 'pepsi challenge' of petrols yet.......having not put anything other than Asda petrol through it since I bought it....as the petrol station is real close and it's the cheapest around. My attitude may change as and when I decide to try something else! Watch this space!

I do have a Shell Driver's club account - the Shell station (almost as local to me) used to be cheaper or as cheap as Asda.......so I did use it for a while with my Mondeo ST TDCI.....and tried the V Power Diesel the Regular Fuel Save stuff and also Asda on occasion......V power made the car more 'eager' to accelerate.....but to be honest none of the fuels made much of a difference to me in mpg terms.

Shell normal diesel every time for me. I'm getting mid fifties MPG, calculated manually, and I also find that under hard acceleration there is far less smoke from the exhaust than with fuel bought from Tesco's.

Recently my car's been doing about 30-31 mpg on my 10 mile trip to work however this AM gave me 34.5 mpg, my driving style's not changed and the only recent changes I can put this down too would firstly be that the weather temp has gone up about 5 degrees, or the fact that on monday i put 1/2 a tank of Tesco momentum 99 into the car and having not really driven it since then just noticed the difference...

In all turbo petrol and diesel cars ive owned i have tried all variants of fuel and havent noticed any difference whatsoever. Any perceived differences would more likely be due to the prevailing conditions at the time i.e weather etc.

Sometime syour own perceptions change from one day to the next. Some days my car feels fast the next day it feels slower. I'll bet it isnt actually slower but there are so many factors that influence your perception of a cars perfromanace and they are very rarely exactly constant from one day to the next.

Try driving a 1.0 litre city car then get back in your CR VRS. Your own car suddenly feels like a ferrari despite being no faster that it ever was previoulsy.

I buy the cheapest diesel i can find when my light comes on and notice absolutely no change. I have also never witnessed any fuel savings or losses as a result of using different fuels as fuel consumptio various massively depending on prevailing conditions.

The only way to know for sure is to conduct scientifc back to back comparisons. Fifth gear did something close to this in a Golf GTI. They tried all fuel variants and the differences were so slight as to be negligible. We are speaking the difference of 2 bhp on a 200bhp car going from cheapo supermarket 95 to top of the range 99 ron "perfromance" fuel. Summed it up perfectly for me i.e irrelevant.

Long term engine damage is a totally different thing. I havent seen anything confirmed either way to date to prove that supermarket fuel destroys engines but certainly if it did negatively impact on engine life then this factor alone would make me buy shell fuel or similar but certainly not any perceived but non existent performance gain.

Well, after a trip from Cumbernauld to Leyland where I set the cruise control about 70.....only slowing down for a couple of sets of roadworks on the M74/M6, I completed a 390 mile or so journey with an average fuel consumption (calculated brim to brim) or about 35mpg Tyre pressure was fine.

Hmmmm, wee bit disappointed in that to be honest as my usual mix of a motorway and town driving gets me about 30....still ,it was a comfortbale and relaxed ride!

Anyway, on getting back to 'Numb and Cauld'....which it was, I filled her up with V Power Petrol. Bizarrely, the first couple of miles, she actually felt a bit rough!! Settled down pretty quickly though......so.....I'll run 2 or 3 more tanks of V Power though to see if there is any perceivable merit in me switching to the dearer 'super' unleaded. I had a shell driver's club card and account anyway....so I will probably get a discount voucher with 3 or 4 tanks through plus the points already on the card - which will help offset the difference in cost a little!

35mpg at 70mph??? That sounds pants. My old S3 (x plate) used to get 40mpg at 80mph. Sometimes even low 40's. Ok mine was 1.8 turbo but had 210bhp and being an older engine surely the new VRS petrol should be better??? Weird.

'Pants' was exactly the word that sprung to mind with me too!! I was expecting closer to 40....tyres were fine....and I didn't notice a strong head wind opposing me on two different directions of travel!!

If you are that worried about mpg, buy a blue motion diesel or stay at home!.

Seriously, there is no cheap way of getting around these days. They say walk or cycle to save money but when I go for a run, I cover 8 miles in about an hour. My heart rate monitor says I have burnt about 1000kCal which is roughly the contents of 3 Mars Bars. Now a Mars Bar is about 50p so it costs me £1.50 to cover 8 miles on foot!

Drive it, enjoy it.

unless you're trying to shift a few pounds....then its free :giggle:

I use Shell every time or in an emergency Tesco's premium fuel. Partly because it does seem to go better than with BP, partly because I have a Shell loyalty card, and probably mainly that they're the only branded station to match the lowest local price. I can't remember the last time I saw a BP garage that wasn't more expensive than most others locally, even ones on the same street - I really get the impression some people only use BP because it has "British" in its name (probably the same people who used to buy Rovers).

Perceived variance aside, day to day differences can be down to the weather conditions (humidity and temperature especially) if nothing else.

i always used to use vp but its just a rip off now so use js fuel.

I put shell diesel in both our cars and have just started putting millers in too. It's a cheaper option than using v power which is a silly price IMO. The Seat is currently doing about 4mpg above it's long term average but it's a bit early to say whether this is a permenant improvement.

other day 139.9 for derv (Wow I know) and 157.9 for preium derv.

Why would you?

Shell all the time for my TDI 110 - so long as it is FuelSave. Some Shell stations have "Shell Regular" which is as bad (if not worse) that the supermarket stuff. FuelSave is great though.

I struggle to see where a diesel would gain from 'super' fuel. Petrol the added performance or eagerness is obvious if you are changing fromv regular 95 ron to 97/98 etc.

All of ours get either Sainsburys (its cheap, at the entrance to my estate and I get Nectar points) or Asda (its cheap and we do our shopping there). That said, I do treat the moped to super unleaded sometimes as it runs smoother than normal 95.
