Weird noise arriving home tonight, exhaust dragging on floor noise :)!?

Featured Replies

I had been driving for around 8 miles and all of a sudden it sounded like my exhaust had fallen off and was dragging on the floor, like a load of tins had fallen out of my boot and were bouncing down the road. I stopped the car and the noise went away, pulled off and the noise was there again so it was my car making the sound.

I pulled up on drive and switched the engine off, started it again and went for a drive and it was absolutely fine. Stopped the engine, started again and fine again.

What do you think this was? I think I have heard something similar before but it was as loud as tonight so I didn't think anything of it as it didn't come back until now. The underneath was fine as far as I could see and there didn't appear to be anything on the road.

Cheers

I have had the same, bloody scary....

Like mikeholroyd says; probably a stone in the brake.

I had this in first month of ownership; thought the suspension had collapsed! Pulled over and called Skoda RSA; they arrived, said they had passed my house and knew what the issue was... gravel drive.

I thinks it's a trapped stone too. I haven't experienced it but I certainly recognise that noise from past cars.

It was a frightening noise though. Jesus! I am just being careful as have only 3 months left of warranty lol It was just so loud for what it was and happened so suddenly :) At least it isn't just me that's experienced it.

I had similar two or three times - stone sounds right. last time it happene i stopped, reversed, drove on and the notice was gone

Another vote for it being a trapped stone - I've never known a car like the Octavia for managing to trap stones against the brake disc but the job cars do it regularly - and at times it really does sound like the exhaust is dragging along the road.

Had this happen on me twice, trapped stone is a perfect explanation, surprised I didn't think of that :)

Stones it is then :) I have been out today and nothing, absolutely silent...

Puts my mind at rest knowing it isn't anything serious.

Thanks

Stone caught between the rear disc and stone guard sounds unbelievably awful. Like the devil dragging his nails down corrugated iron.

Bit of welly in reverse or a quick check with a small screwdriver to flick it out can do the trick.

I had a problem like this a few weeks ago, also thought it was a stone turned out it was the thin gaurd the goes round the brake disc had sheared off with battering through deep icy snow and maybe some vibration. An hour later on the ramp with bolts washers it was sorted :)
