Policy legalality

Featured Replies

My wife and my self have our own cars, V5 notice of ownership. Is it leagal for me to insure both cars as main driver, as the wife does not have any NO Claims, so name have my wife as a named driver on the car she owns.

So plain and Simple,

My car, I insure (policy holder) and name my wife as a named driver

Her car, I insure it in my name (policy holder) and name my wife as a named driver

Is this a legal way of getting wifes insurance cheaper,

This is an argument we had at friends last night, I say its wrong he says LV have allowed it,

I now leave it to you good people of Briskoda.

NCB can only be applied to one policy/car.

However certain company's like admiral will grant your wife NBC for the number of years she was on a policy as a named driver...worth giving them a ring.

It's also illegal for you to be the policy holder on your wife's car if she is the main user it's called fronting.

I'm sure I've done this in the past, in fact yes, my old fabia V5 was in my wife's name and I was main driver. Policy in her name.

IIRC it makes little or no difference if you're married

The policy holder should be the primary driver. If she does the majority of the driving she should take out insurance. It's exactly the same situation for teenagers driving on a policy in their mums name. Not legal.

If your wife is the main driver of her car then she should be named as the main driver on the insurance policy - seems pretty self explanatory and anything else would risk the Ins Co. refusing a claim - is it worth trying to circumvent this!!

Worth asking a few of the brokers?

Registered Keeper on the V5 not ownership.

Good Brokers & Insurance companies understand Couples, spouse, partners, families, children

& Multi Insurance Main Driver, Primary User. Matched NCB,s

Commuting, Social and Domestic, Parked during the day, work place, secure parking, college, then

during the night etc. (student children staying at different post codes from mums declared can be well stuffed if ever a clain, break in etc.)

They ask the questions, who owns the vehicle, or is the policy holder the main driver.

Just be honest.

If and when they need to check, or a Loss Adjuster does,

they ask for Fuel receipts, parking tickets, etc.

In other words, have valid insurance and make honest declarations or you are maybe paying just for a piece of paper.

With Online Insurance, not even that anymore.

It doesn't matter who the policy holder is as such, but you do need to tell them who the main driver is.

^^^^^^^

Exactly. V5 & policy holder is irrelevant. Just declare the main driver.

If you want to use the same NCB across 2 vehicles, you'll need to find an Insure that allows it. I've just insured on of my cars with Greenlight and they told me that if I want to get another car they car "mirror" the NCB on it from the current policy. Trouble is, I've now got a massive urge to get another weekend toy :D

If caught fronting you as the policy holder will be refused insurance and that's not something you want.

Insurers also check for major claims so not worth the risk.

You're also hindering her ever getting her own no claims.

As a sidestep to this , my daughter who passed her test in July and got a Ford Ka in September, she added to my policy as a named driver ( multi car policy ) and as she had 7 months of insurance, now due to be renewed 31st March has now got a full years /10 % no claims, with Aviva

Insurers generally accept that husbands and wives or partners will share cars so they're not bothered about specific ownership amongst you. However, as someone said, the NCB will only be built up in the main policyholder's name so your wife's bonus would not build if you were the main policyholder on both. We use insurers who will allow you to swap bonus between spouses at renewal so you could easily transfer the bonus to your wife on the main vehicle she uses.

Fronting isn't really a scenario that arises amongst spouses. It's more to do with the parent/child or experienced/inexperienced mis-match.

Is this still the case if used for business?

It's OK with the companies we use.
