anyone know how long oil lasts in the tin?

Featured Replies

Sorry, random question but I was wondering how long oil will last in the tin in my garage. I brought 5 litres of longlife oil for my mk1 Octavia 110 tdi in 2008 but only needed to use about 400ml at the time and the tin went back into my garage. I've just brought a 2012 Octavia vrs cr170 and was wondering if I can use the oil for top-ups between services? Sorry ;f this question has been asked before but if you search for oil related questions it generates a lot of answers and I could not find a relevant one!! Thanks

The oil for the 1.9 tdi110 is of a diferant vw spec to the oil for the 2.0 tdi 170. Think its 505.00 for the 1.9 and the vrs is 507.00.

I thought you can use 507 in a 1.9 PD as its also 504/505 approved too.

Isn't it more an issue of can you use the 1.9 PD oil in the 2.0 CR (needs to be 507)

yes you can use 507 in a 1.9pd

I had a gallon of Lidl oil I was using for my lawn mowers. After a couple of years open the oil looked like yellow pus. The other gallon I had not opened turned out to be good - at least it still looked like oil. So, at least for cheap rubbish oil, it does go off in the tin.

It seems to last millions of years when it's still in the ground lol.
