Is it safe to run car without crash bar!?

Featured Replies

As title. Think im gonna have to do away with it because i cant get my bumper back on due to my new intercooler :( stressing me out so much! Help...

Safety and insurance spring to mind .

I would go back to the drawing board to get it to fit.

I mean will it not bend the front etc...

Quite funny this really lol.. Logically it would work, cant see the crash bar effecting the handling??

But like said your concern would be insurance/ mot and safety but you dont seem too worried about that so work away lol:)

You can run without it.

Some people think it's unsafe.

Various opinions, expect direct and sometimes amusing/scaremongering posts to follow...

Perfectly safe… until you bump into something, as the bumper itself will do very little without the crashbar behind it, I imagine insurance companies will also take a dim view of it as it will increase the damage done to the car.

I cut a section out of mine to get my I/C to fit. Running without will bring up the usual safety concerns and insurance worries from other members, but ultimately the answer is YES, you can run the car happily without the crash bar fitted. However "safety" in a crash is severely comprimised as that bar will stop/reduce the impact from anything hard you run in to like a tree.

I'd imagine the car would drive fine without it, it may flex a bit more...however as said, the bumper will offer very little resistance in a crash.

Check with your insurance will cover you without it first.

There is rarely a need to remove it completely, so why do it?

I've seen accident damaged cars where the crash bar has had a section cut out or has been removed. No two accidents are the same but I've seen enough to know there is a difference.

Where the bar has a section replaced by a FMIC there seemed to be little difference in protection.

With the bar completely removed, the protection seemed much less for front quarter collisions.

It's there for a reason and is a magnitude stronger than the lock carrier behind it.

Safe to run? yes

Safe to crash? less so

+1 I do and prob pay a bit extra owing to those that don't

exactly, it's not just the uninsured who push up premiums, it's also the ones who aren't technically covered.

Right guys just saying no need to rant! Anyone know anyone who can make pipework to fit?

A picture speaks 1000 words mate - put one up and people will chip in to see if the crash bar can be modded to fit, or if the cooler can be mounted in a different way so the bar can go back on, and try to help you out with the pipework. I wouldnt want to drive without the crash bar tbh.

You have to upload it to a site like Photobucket, then copy and paste the 'IMG' link into here (where you type your replies)

Joe - i have the cooler mounted on the crash bar but its too low plus i need piping to go underneath it. Also it wont fit behind it because the radiator sits at an angle and the cooler is too thick..

Chop a section out to raise it up abit if you dont totally want to loose the bar or make a bracket like i did maybe.

Me. Every last detail on all my cars is accounted for. God help anyone not properly insured that ever crashes into me.
