DPF issues

Featured Replies

I am looking at purchasing another Octy vRS, after being away for 4 years, but this time am looking at the diesel rather than the petrol, which brings me onto the subject of DPF's.

My current Altea 1.9 diesel doesn't have one, and I have never owned a car that has, and am wondering what the issues are with them ??

I have been tinkering with cars for over 30 years now, but have no experience of DPF's, and wondered how much of a problem they are on the PD/CR 170 ??

PD,s are quite troublesome as they should never have fitted it to them. CR,s are much better as the engine is designed for them.

At the risk of tempting fate I have a pd140 with DPF and have had absolutely no problems at all since I got the car at 32k miles. Its now on 90k and I've only seen the light on 4 or 5 times, cleared esily each time with correct driving.

No problems with mine.

If you are aware its there and actually use the car for abit of motorway driving you should be fine.

For the amount out there i dont see many cars really

Looking at other threads on here, there is mention of an additive which DPF-equipped cars need, which appears to be very expensive. Is there an additive bottle under the bonnet somewhere that requires frequent topping-up or something then ??

The CR engined models do not use any additives.

Which engines use the additive? I saw some stuff about Superb 1s with 140 engines. Do any of the 140 Octavia's also need them?

Only the Superb MkI had the additive, no other Skoda's do.

Thanks, I ask as I have a PD with a DPF (for now :) )

Cheers for that peeps....hopefully going to look at one on Sunday...an '09 plate CR with 40k on the clock....anything in particular I need to look out for ??

10-plate CR vRS at 40250 miles now with no issues.

Never even see a light on, but I do a fair amount of motoway/A-road mileage.

Update.....just been to Nottingham, and put a deposit down on this one...

There is fsh and lots of documentation with it, and I managed to find a contact number for the previous owner so gave him a ring.

Have to feel for the guy...apparently the car was on finance, and he got made redundant in December with only one payment outstanding on the car, so was absolutely gutted, but had to choose between putting food on the table and keeping the car !!

I asked him about a DPF issue which was mentioned in the paperwork from 2011, and he said that he DID have an issue which he believed was down to cheap(ish) supermarket fuel, but the sensors (?) were changed and he then stopped using afore-mentioned fuel, and hasn't had a problem since !! Fingers crossed, it should be okay !!

Going slightly o/t, what is the service interval on the timing belt, as I have heard different figures mentioned ??

Also, it only has 17's on it, despite the ad saying 18's, which I thought were standard ??

Be wary of 17 inch alloys, especially on such a late pre-facelift, it's often a good sign of it being an import.

17" alloys were only standard on very early UK sourced vRS's, so this one is either an import or someone has swapped the alloys for smaller ones.

Some owners have changed to 17's for easier sourcing of winter tyres but it's rare as the popular choice is 16" or for a softer ride.

I think 17's might have been standard on right-hand drive models from Ireland and Cyprus.

It's not a deal breaker but it might be worth another quick call to the previous owner to ask if he was the original owner?

Dint u fancy a FL at this price mate?

phil,

welcome back.

17" wheels do sound a little odd, I agree it could signal an import or just someone wanting a slightly softer ride or using a single set of wheels fir summer/winter as 17" will no doubt be a lot cheaper for tyres.

I doubt you would have dpf issues with your commute but if you do there is always the option to have it removed ;) . Shark performance aren't too far from you in mansfield if your looking for a specialist to maintain/dpf remove on your car.

I did fancy an FL, but the only ones around for that money seem to be the Petrol variety (unless you are going to upset me now and post a link to an FL Diesel !!!). My budget was 11k, so this obviously fits the bill perfectly, plus I got a good deal for a trade-in on my Altea without having to hassle too much !!!

Cheers Matt....have replied to your PM mate, and it's good to be back....re the wheels, I posted this last week..

http://www.briskoda....089-17s-or-18s/

and going from what soot1e says, it sounds like I could be better off on the 17's, even though the 18's would obviously look better (not that I've got any choice in the matter now !!!)

As you know, I can do all my hooning around in my company cars, so the Octy will not be getting thrashed too often....just enough to keep the DPF clean methinks !!!!!

Cheers Silver....as I said above, I did speak with the previous (and only) owner to date, and I'm sure the documentation confirms it as being a UK-sourced car (possibly the stealers in Peterborough I believe ?)

Does it have electric windows all round? IIRC correctly imports from Cyprus don't have electric windows in the back.

£11k and you cudnt find a FL....

Have to agree that is a stunning looking car, however, it's got the DSG box, and I wanted a manual, and the starting price is £10,900, so I would expect it rapidly going out of my price range !!

Okay...I have had a few hours to spare this afternoon and have done some digging.

It turns out that, as Silver 1011 suspected above, this is an Irish import.

It was manufactured in August 2008 (then presumably shipped to Ireland), but was then imported as a new vehicle by Motorpoint in Peterboro, and then first registered in July 2009 with 6 miles on the clock. It was then sold to the chap I spoke to yesterday, who has owned it since then (and wishes he still did !!)

The other thing that has cropped up, is that on some insurance search engines it comes up as a 4x4 estate !!!!

I queried this with my local dealer, but when he checked the database the vehicle does not show up at all, either under the reg. no. or the chassis no., so I contacted Skoda (uk), who said that it doesn't show up on the normal database, as it is an Irish-registered vehicle, but does show up on another of their systems and advised me to go in to the dealers with the V5 and they could then manually input it onto the general database !!!

I am basically satisfied that it is a genuine good car, and am inclined to go ahead with the deal, but wondered if anyone has had a similar problem, and what other peoples thoughts are ????

Also, what is the difference in spec (other than the 17's), to a UK car ??

Edited by phillip

Irish spec car's are usually better specced as standard compared with the UK as they are more expensive.

Early UK spec vRS's (with 17" alloys) usually missed out on rear electric windows, climatronic (got the normal rotary dials and A/C on/off button) and the central armrest / jumbo box with AUX-in. It looks like the one you are looking at has all this.

Look for other juicy bits like auto lights and wipers (I can see the rain sensor on the windscreen so it should have auto wipers), cruise control, and Maxidot. All these were optional extra's in the UK but were standard in Ireland.

The other options were xenon headlights (no headlight washers so not fitted), Columbus sat nav (Stream MP3 fitted), full leather / heated seats (standard half leather / alcantara fitted), sunroof, curtain airbags and active headrests.

It seems a little unusual for it to be sat in Ireland for 12 months. It's not normally good for a car to be in storage for so long, especially if its outside (perished rubber including hoses, pipes, tyres etc.) underbody corrosion etc. and frequent cold starting (moving it around the compound etc.). If you've given it a good check over then I'm sure it'll be a good one.

If nothing else you'll have one of the latest registered (09) pre-facelift vRS's on the road (excluding the Limited Edition)!
