Smoke and lights.

Featured Replies

In the three months I have had my car, I have never had the dpf regen light. My journey is nearly all motorways, so I guess it sorts itself out.

I have been off for the last week and done lots of trips into town (less than 1 mile)

Today I started out and there was a bit of white smoke. I pulled out of my road and there was a big puff (I got flashed by the car behind)

It then was fine, followed by a bong and the dpf light half mile later just before I stopped.

I plan to Italian tune on the motorway tomorrow morning. Have I just turned it off halfway through a regeneration, hence the smoke and light, or should I be worried?

Any thoughts? I have never had the regeneration light and so don't really know what to expect. how often does it come on? Should I use an additive to help it? If so, what?

Hi. just a thought, your tdi is a 56 plate, so it will be a PD engine, which means you are unlikely to have a DPF... DPF only came fitted to CR octavia as far as I am aware. perhaps problem is elsewhere?

DPF was fitted to the PD engine :)

The VRS has it.

Ok, but I have a dpf light. Looks like an exhaust box with dots in it, bright orange on dash.

Also remember reading it in the manual

The PD170 does have a DPF.

Mine smokes too, just before a regen normally. My car recently spent some time iddling which allows traces of oil to leak past the turbo seals and into the DPF. As the DPF begins to regen and get hot the oil begins to burn off - hence the smoke.

Quite normal.

My vRS spends 95% of its time on the motorway so no real DPF issues. If I come off the motorway and into town I'll guarantee to see the light within a day or two.

No need for an Italian tune up, just sit at 60mph in 4th and stay at this speed / RPM, my vRS jolts/jerks a little when the DPF begins (with a little smoke) and takes around four to six miles or five minutes to regen successfully and for the light to go out.

Actually, it had idled from cold for 10 minstrel and then I had to turn off and go in for half hour before starting the smoky journey. Your post explains it perfectly and I can sleep easy tonight knowing my baby is okay...

Thanks!

Bloody auto correct! Mins, not minstrels!

The secret now is to avoid interupting the next regeneration attempt.

Now the light is on the car is telling you it needs your help to do a successful regeneration as it hasn't been able to do one itself due to your recent stop/start driving.

You only get a few chances now. The next step (if you continue to drive without a successful regen) will be to get the EML (Engine Management Light) and glowplug light together with the current DPF light which will result in the car going into limp-home mode.

The only way to clear the DPF at this point will be to take it to the dealers for them to do a forced regen.

Awesome, no pressure then!

Feel like keanu reeves when he had the bomb on the bus that would go off if he went under 50mph

Sometimes the auto spell can produce genuinely funny results.......made me laugh anyway!

At least you can get it to regen next time you are out. Out of interest is it possible to force a regen with VCDS?

it wont take much to get it to do a regen though.

My VRS spends most of its life doing town trips but at weekends and on the odd weekday it goes out on A roads etc and i've not seen my dpf light for months.

As silver said, thats how it is but its not as serious as it sounds as you can easily get it to do a regen. Up the motorway for a junction or two and it will be fine

It is possible to do a forced regen on the CR170 using VCDS as it can be done with the car stationary.

Don't quote me but I'd read on here that the PD170 needs to be moving for a successful forced regen?

Not convinced myself as my PD170 had a forced regen at the dealers and I don't remember seeing it leave the workshop...

Haha made me laugh that :)
