Thinking of getting one due to many horror stories I hear of these dodgey swines reversing into you at lights etc, question is which make and model and where to go for a good professional install. All advice much appreciated

Blackvue are the best but cost £££. I'm saving up for the one's the Russians use, they look good enough on YouTube lol

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

DIY for these cams is not difficult, a little bit of searching the site will give you some info

I have a BlackVue 380 and a DVR 027. Both have their pluses and minuses, but of the two, I prefer the BlackVue, due to it being more discrete and higher picture quality. The DVR has a built in screen for instant replay and starts recording much faster, the main fault of the BlackVue.

As for installation, its really easy, you just need a couple of bits off ebay and a half hour.

1. Fuse tap http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4ac261fbdd

2. Cigar socket http://www.ebay.co.u...=item257b5348aa

Fuse tap into an ignition switched fuse, connect the red wire from the socket to that. Black wire to a bare piece of metal in the fuse box. Plug the camera power into that, tuck it into the fuse box. Run the cable up the A pillar (you can run it up the edge under the door seals if you dont want to rip the trim off) and along the headlining to the camera. Jobsa.

Im rubbish at doing this sort of thing, guaranteed id bugger it up, plus ive heard them on sucker pads are illegal

They're illegal to put blocking your view of the area covered by your wipers. Stick them up high left of the mirror and they won't be in your way. The BlackVues tuck infront the mirror and are not seen from the driving position.

I'd look into that a bit more.

It's not against the law.

What do you want to spend?

That will help us advise.

The new Roadhawk 720 looks good and it's about £140, cheaper than a Blackvue and does all you need really.

How so? All I can see through the base of the swept area on my screen is the bonnet.

Then its not really blocking your view of the road, is it? :)

My point was that putting something on your screen will not automatically have them throw you in prison and crush your car.

And mine; my point was that "blocking your view of the road" is not identically equal to "in the swept area of the screen".

Hey, I'm just quoting the law. :)

Quick question gents, ive hid all the wires and connected the earth but what have you put your fuse tap into? Ive tried the radio that comes on with the ignition but when the key is out, the radio turns off but the camera stays on. Ive even tried plugging it into the front left window but for some reason the window still works now without the key, it usually works for a few seconds when the key is taken out. Thanks

What car is it? I know which fuses are switched for the Octavia II and Fabia I (well, Polo 9N). If you have a meter, poke about the various fuses and find one that is switched.

Ive sorted it now, all up and running. Thanks for the reply though.

Id look tp spend up to 300... cheaper would still be nice though

As it has been mentioned above, the BlackVues are the best in terms of overall picture quality (especially at night). Though there are conditions where they fall short:

Note the compression artefacts (squares).

If you don't want to spend much money, take a look at these two models: 1 2. They are the same in terms of video quality and both have positive comments.
