Anti Shudder Valve problem?

Featured Replies

Suspecting the anti shudder valve on my PD130 has a fault.

There is no sign of the the actuator arm moving when turning the engine on or off. There is vaccum on the pipe when turning off, but nothing when starting.

Should I be able to see movement on the ASV arm?

the only movement is on switch OFF then after a few seconds the vac should release and it will open under spring pressure ready for the next start up it's prob'ly coked up try moving by hand

No movement at all when switching off. The actuator arm moves freely by hand so I'm thinking the internal seal maybe goosed or the gears have stripped.

on mine the plastic shaft between the actuator and metal control arm of the butterfly vane is broken.

If you have a short term vacuum being applied when the engine is turned off, then that would suggest the diaphragm has probably failed.

Ah mbames I was hoping you would pitch in.

Yeah there's vacuum on shut down. Do you know if the diaphram is available as a seperate part? I know the ASV isn't.

Not sure. It is one of these things I should fix on my car, but haven't got around it it. Care liberation of a part from a scrap yard might be the best way forward.

Well I found the source of the problem. Stripped the ASV down, & there's a really thin rubber diaphram inside that had a large split in it. I've bodged it up with a mechanics rubber glove for the moment.

The diaphram isn't available as a seperate part, & you have to buy the whole EGR! TPS quoted £178.

Ouch! Expensive :-( VAG don't sell the actuator assembly for the turbos either, they would much rather you shell out £700 on a whole new turbo. Aren't they nice!

I like the bodge method, I shall have to remember that incase I need to do something similar in the future.
