2013 vrs estate - fitting a towbar.How hard?

I should be taking delivery of a vrs estate in the next week or so and was wondering does anyone have any experience of fitting a towbar? preferably a detachable one with single electrics.

Now is it easy enough to do myself or should it be left to professionals?

Very easy.

The bumper comes off with self tapping screws. The steel reinforcement is three screws either side. The towbar has two long legs that slide unto the chassis rails of the car through holes uncovered by removing the steel reinforcement.

Two 16mm bolts through the chassis into the legs either side.

Job done.

The single electrics are a doddle. There is even a grommet for the cable already present. You need to use a CanBus compliant relay to fit but it ain't dear. The only trouble is running a wire to the battery or fuze box.

It's very DIY. Search my user name for more posts. I don't have access to my book marks on this tablet, but I will post links to a guide later.

If you search the net for any of the towbar brands (westfalia is the brand I used) they all have detailed instructions for fitting a Skoda towbar.

I fitted the oem removable towbar and full oem electrics. In theory straight foward but took a whole day and ended up tweaking a few bits as I wanted the loom to go the correct way :)

Then you need to programme the new setup to enable TSP, alarm etc etc

Very handy around cars and was shocked it ended up stealing a day off me lol

I have had quotes of £182 for a fixed fitted and £320 for a removable from a local specialist.

I think i might go with them but should i be tight and go fixed or splash out on removable? £138 is a massive difference for something i cannot see when i am driving.

My local specialist want almost £550 for supplying & fitting a removal tow bar (single electrics) on my Blackline hatch :angry:

I paid £330 for my Witter detachable.

Surely part of the attraction to the vRS is its looks? Don't spoil it with a fixed ball towbar!

£350 won't be a CAN loom. Silent reversing sensors when towing/carrying Bikes is good. A tweaked traction control program could be invaluable! If you're keeping the car any length of time I'd spend the extra money for the OEM loom.

For my next car I'll be fitting the bar myself then leaving the OEM loom in the boot and heading to a local independent auto electrician to plug in the loom and code it.
