How durable is paint on the front grille?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, basically my car is going in to have my peeling lacquered crappy rear spoiler painted on mon along with one of the mirror caps that has a few marks on it.

In debating getting the chrome bit painted the same colour as the cars body, silver. How durable is the paint once done? How easy does it stone chip and then peel?

Look forward to your opinions. Thanks in advance Lee.

I painted mine myself back in May. It's got about 5 stone chips on it now so I'm going to wrap it :)

I imagine you'll get a better finish from a spray shop.

Like any paint it depends on the quality of the prep work, type of paint used and the number of coats applied.

As above, as long as its done correctly it'll be as good as the bumper/outer grill etc etc

The bloke said at the paint shop he couldn't guarrantee once it got stone chipped how long it would last as its the funny chrome plastic.

Il see how much they want to do it, they are approved by seat Skoda VW and Lexus, so should be good.

But you'd remove the chrome before spraying it. . . .

For the front grille try plastidip spray!

Nasty harmfull stuff but durability wise its a lot tougher than paint and doesnt chip

Matt that's exactly what I thought too. I was just repeating what the bloke said lol.

Iv seen people plastidipping their wheels, looks good. Il go the painted route first, then if it starts to look tired and stone chipped il try the plasti dip stuff.

Il see how much extra they want to do the grille then and go from there I think.

Cheers for the input.

I paid 60 notes for a bodyshop to paint my grill and fog light surrounds Black Magic sometime last year and is still holding up well... No stone chips so far, hope it holds out!

Based on what you've said are you taking it to some sort of dealer? Spraying and any body repair/paint work should be done at a dedicated body shop, not somewhere that's an xyz brand specialist. The fact they mention the difficulty in painting chrome should have you asking serious questions before they get anywhere near your car.

My mate had his sprayed and it chipped very quickly, underneath the chrome is still there. Mine however is holding up well after two years of my rattle can job, the difference being I spent a afternoon rubbing all the chrome off. The few little chips that are on it are less noticeable as they are not shiny either.
