citigo PID / VW maps and more

While shopping for the Citigo's PID i've stumbled upon a second-hand VW "maps and more" from the VW up car.

What is the difference between these two units (VW's is normally more expensive) and will the VW's version work in the citigo?

They should be the same unit and if the user hasn't added a password, you should be able to use it, if you reset it to its factory setting.

After a factory reset, (free software and the USB cable) the unit asks you to put it in the car. It should then start up as a skoda unit.

But ask the dealer - they should know.

If you connect it to the Citigo and it starts up as a Skoda PiD then there will be no difference.

As far as I know, the only difference between the unit fitted to an Up! and Citigo is the specific VW Think Blue software which teaches economy driving.

Thank you for your helpful replys.

The device has been used in a VW up! (It's second) and it does have the think blue software installed.

Hopefully, fingers crossed, I can just do a reset and it will accept the citigo. I will see what happens first if I just 'pop it in'

The PID seems to hold software for both CITIGO, UP! and MII. It chooses what to show by knowing what car it is in.

It gets that info after reseting the software to factory settings and then placing it in the car of your choice.

That is the info I have.

I found a German forum where people discuss the PID software.

Apparently, there is an XML file where the car's VIN is stored. I'm guessing, this might lock the unit to a specific car.

Unless it's possible to just open the file and change the number to the new VIN of your car.

I managed to change the start-up screen to a photo that I shot of my car - the files are in the ChangeStartupScreens folder - The 3 folder is Skoda - just exchange the wallpaper.BMP with another .BMP 480x272 in size.

A month in and finally got around to getting updates for the maps in my PID, if I download the latest update will it also contain the previous updates or do I need to do them all in turn?

Just do the latest update.

Just do the latest update.

And it overwrites the existing.

Make sure you do a backup first.

And one point... The whole of Europe will not fit on the PiD

There's a new window that comes up during the update so you can choose the maps you need.

I downloaded the whole of europe without having to de-select anything.

I had a voucher for 80% off the map updates. But I nearly missed out as the offer only lasted about 3 weeks from registering the PID. I managed to get 2 years worth of updates for around £16.00 which I think is good value?

Cheers for that, just did the latest update for the UK and Ireland, can't see me going any further afield any time soon.

Hi - New to forum - interesting as I thought i'd bricked my navicon 70 - I stupidly formatted the flash section of the unit (Doh!) - I have subsequently managed to get a standard 70 with UK maps back to the unit - BUT I have lost all the Skoda canbus stuff - does anyone have a copy of the files (without maps) so I can try to get unit back to Skoda spec

You should be able to do this through the Garmin Fresh software (https://skoda.garmin.com/skoda/site/fresh). If you select the 'Backup and restore' option from the main screen, there's a 'Device restore' button down towards the bottom. That will download a clean, up-to-date version of the Skoda PID software and install it. Obviously, you'll lose any current maps, but you'll be able to restore those afterwards.

I say "should", because I'm assuming there isn't some DRM jiggery-pokery that prevents Fresh from recognising a vanilla Navigon 70, but the description seems to suggest that it'll work even if the PID isn't recognised.

Good luck!
