DRL Placement ?

Featured Replies

I don't think it's their brightness that results in other people flashing, I think it's more the fact that they are confused and think they are fog lights.

I'd be interested to see some pictures of the rear LED's if you have any?

I agree that people are mistaking them for the fog lights, but this is precisely because of perceived high intensity+location+bulb colour. The only way around it that keeps factory DRLs is to retrofit a LED. White LEDs are recognized as DRLs, thankfully, a small drop in intensity helps rather than hinders Have not been flashed at since fitting them.

Photos for the rear. Rear LED vs bulb (bulb on the left, LED on the right) on the Superb (the 2nd Luxeon one I posted). Clearly, LED is stronger and illuminates the cluster just as well. That's at tail light intensity, at fog light intensity the LED matches the (filtered) bulb intensity, but I did not take the photo.

Just to demonstrate it further, next photo shows the tail LED light viewed from the side of the car, at around 120deg angle. Clearly still plenty of light left. Ignore the colour, camera thinks strongest light is whitest, in reality the LED is deeper red than the filtered bulb light.

The fog/tail lamp section on the Superb is illuminated in full and appears well lit even if you look from a side of the car. These LEDs may not be using the reflector, but are far more powerful than filtered bulb light, and the LED centre is located close to where original bulb filament sits. Red luxeons caught up with bulbs many years ago, as to get red light you have to filter out something like 3/4 of lumen output of the bulb. So even a 120 lumen red LED can outperform a 460 lumen bulb as long as light originates more or less from a correct point in the housing and has sufficient spread to hit entire cluster surface that the bulb normally lights up.

I have noticed in the past that the rear tail (night) lights on the MkI Superb were a little dim (same on the MkII estate) but the LED's you have fitted seem much better.

It may be the camera again, but they almost look a little too bright?

Agreed though that the spread of light output from within the cluster seems better than I'd expected for an LED. It looks as though it's actually illuminating the fringes of the boot lid and bumper too...

Thanks for the pictures by the way

Brightness is OK, for some reason they looked too bright in Octavia's clusters so it varies with car.

They look OK in real life, deep red without spillover. You can see in the first picture that halogen also lights up bumper a little. There is more light at bottom part of bumper because the car is in the garage next to a large white box that reflects some light back.

Cheers mate...but £180 is way too steep for me !!

Been searching around and found these...

Will they fit, are they compatable, and has anyone fitted them and can recommend them ???

Those are the type of thing I was thinking about in post 1, with the mock up pic to see what they would look like. I still dont think they look too bad in that position.

Just watched the above installation video, and it looks straight forward, but I didn't know you had to remove the existing front sidelight bulbs......won't this put the bulb failure light on ????

I use a 120 led bulb in my FL Octy, it doesnt give me any bulb warning (unless I sit with the ignition on!)

The photos dont do them justice, they are very bright and you can drive on them and clearly see the bright white glow on the road surface and the cars infront. Currently about £6-£8 a pair on eBay!!!

Ive had mine in for 8 months now without failure!

I'll try to get an evening shot for you to see

Yes, I like these. Can you quote exact item number .(or PM me) please.

No good for my pre-FL as it's only got the round fog lights !!

Heres the link for the ones I purchased....

I got them from this guy and the first set he sent one of the LEDs had a slight blue ting and failed within a few minutes, I emailed the guy and he was really good posting out a replacement the same day. They have been great since that day!

Very crisp and white!

Thanks, has to be so much better than the poxy OEM bulbs.

Try popping into Halfords, they have quite a wide variey of aftermarket LED DRL's made by Ring with broad pricing too.

If you google 'aftermarket drl' and look at the images, theres plenty of inspiration on where to put them (if aftermarket drls are your thing!).

To the OP, I'd definitely, definitely, definitely go down the route of fitting fogs and drls within those. Anything else just looks cheap, even expensive ones like the Phillips sets...

Think the genuine Visteon fog/DRL'S are only £40 a side so any on ther route is not worth it!

I cant say but do Skoda give away the harness at the front?

Took the plunge and purchased lamp units to replace the black blanks, fitted a DRL unit and wiring, plus LED bulbs.

Good move, not the cheapest solution but the best looking by a long, long way.

Nice job.
