VRS novelty factor

Featured Replies

I have just covered 2000 miles in my new furb and have loved it,now for some reason it feels slower and noisier(especially on over run, like a gearbox whine!)Is it just because I have got used to it?

On picking it up after selling my mk2 16v golf,it felt awesome.now I`m not sure.

Please tell me I am just a paronoid sod with nothing better to worry about. :(

Could just be the warmer weather? it doesn't like the heat very much :(

Hmm....mine has done just under 5000 and its getting better, slightly faster.

I agree with you that you become accustomed to the way the furby pulls like a train and forget how fast it is, I went to portugal for a fortnight (and hadnt driven a thing for 14 days) and when I got back it was the same feeling of :D that I had when it was new

I've done 950miles in mine now and got used to the torque a bit. Its only when other people are in the car and I put my foot down that I see them jolt forward when I lift off to change lol. Then the comment- 'This car is fooking rapid!!!' :D

I love it to bits

IMO, its easy to forget how quick the vRS is going because of the unfussed way it delivers its power. At first, the torque and the turbo boost make it feel really quick, much quicker in fact than it really is, totally unlike the more progressive power of your Golf.

Unfortunately, because of this, I became bored with mine. A remap would have helped no doubt, but I would get used to that as well. My mate had a TDI Sport Ibiza, and he got bored with that fairly soon, and then he got it remapped. He was happy again for a while, but sold it for a petrol because he found it boring.

The car I have now probably isn't as quick - although I have yet to prove this conclusively - but the power the weight ratio of my Golf is better, so it might be quicker, but I prefer the petrol power even though it isn't as immediately impressive.

Had this discussion quite a while ago, and the conclusion was as discussed here:-

You get used to the car, and adapt your driving style.

The conclusion was that you need to drive another car for a day or 2 ( if you can), then go back to the car - and HEY PRESTO, feels like a new car.

OR drive like a pensioner for 2 - 3 days, then use the torque after this time. :)

What do you mean by 'especially on overun'?

I mean when you lift off the accelerator and coast there seems to be a gearbox/diff whine???

I get this whine on mine.

Trouble is if you drive like a granny for a while the ECU adapts to your driving style and you then have to give it a blast to make it go again :D

Yes - the problem is that when I go out in the MX-5 I can't believe how quiet it is - especially sitting at traffic lights wondering if the engine is still running. Then next day back in the Fabia, there's someone under the bonnet rattling a box of bolts all the time... :(

What do you expect? Its a diesel :P You did realise that when you bought it?

what engine noise? :P

If you really think the fabia is loud, try an old diesel. The 418 I have sounds like a god darn tractor, everyone knows when I'm coming as they can hear me a mile off!

Like others have said you do get used to the fabia or any car. I find that durlin the week I drive like an old fart and at the weekend I have a nice long "fun" drive.

I'm not bored with my fabia :D

Maybe you should get the engine soundproofing mod from the ibiza, the dense foam that goes under the engine cover.

Hehe. You should have got an Elegance 2.0! When I got in one for my first test drive, the engine was running and I didn't realise it. The two main issues for me in getting a new Fabia were noise/comfort and smell/pollution. For me, they outweighed the speed/handling and fuel economy advantages of the VRS.

It's the first diesel I've ever owed though - and it's certainly much noisier than other current models - have you noticed how Honest John in the Telegraph will never recommend anyone gets a car with the VW1.9 engine because of its coarseness? A friend switched from a 320 diesel to an Accord diesel and both of those engines are considerably more refined - as apparently is the VW 2litre unit...

I feel a B&Q Pikey mod coming on......loft insulation any one.

But you have to realise some vehicles have an "image" problem if you don't get the "right" model - hence some vehicles I've had previously which have fallen into this "trap":

Peugeot 206 GTi - yes, the 1.9 version :)

Subaru Impreza - yes, the Turbo :) - but the 5 door :(

Freelander - yes, the V6 :) (thinking about performance rather than economy) (even then people were amazed I'd bought a Freelander...)

Suzuki Bandit - no, not the 1200 :(

Hence Skoda Fabia - yes, the vRS !!! :) :) :) I don't think I could bring myself to drive an Elegance (unless debadged...)

And mine was bought for the speed/handling and fuel economy advantages...

 Gotta love the professional's qualitative opinion here ;)

I know what you mean, the Mazda is a very quiet car at tickover compared to the vRS but count yourself lucky you don't have a Renault diesel as well. This is even noisier than the vRS. Ours has only done 38k but sounds like a haggard old tractor. It's recently developed a nice growl at around 2.5k rpm and yesterday something fell off the car whilst travelling around 85mph.

Good job it's a company car and not our own.

Yo yo yo, I ain't no pro, but I'm being real here...Furby vRS is beautiful & quick..but it's still a taka taka car
