fuel tank concern.

Featured Replies

hi all

filled up my 2012 combi today, 2nozzle clicks, went to pay and upon my return we have diesel dripping briskly from somewhere between the filler neck and the tank. soon have quite a mess by pump, move car to side of forecourt where it continues to leak. sand bucket tidys up the mess. have a client with me so have no choice but to continue home, 10 miles. check under car and leak has stopped. is this a known problem or have I caused it myself by overbrimming. your views would be helpful.

thanks.

I'm sure our resident fuel tank expert will be along soon enough, but in the meantime it could be as simple as overbrimming. Skoda advises refuelling to when the nozzle switches off for the first time, otherwise the expansion volume fills up. It varies by model across the VAG models, for example MK1 Touran's are full on the second click.

Did you get any back splah or brim it up to the neck? If so that would be my guess.

i never go over the first click and never fill it right up unless going on a long journey, usually every 2 days i put £30 in it and it does me and never noticed any leaking but if you don't stick the nozzle right in it will keep clicking off to early

Petrol or diesel? Petrol has evaportation control system connected at tank neck, it can detach / or someone can while trying to nick fuel from your tank (access is under rear wheel well liner, worth double checking).

I saw this on other cars at least twice, last one was a Picasso pouring petrol all over forecourt, with the owner happily looking into clean filler neck.

On a diesel, the only thing not visible to you that could detach at top of the neck is the vent valve, but since it is in the middle of neck opening, hardly possible to have a continuing leak there.

At the fuel tank itself, there are vent pipes and these are worth checking, as well as fuel feed to the engine

Having said that, I have been filling fuel tanks of exactly the same design on my 3 Skodas, level right up to the metal fuel filler opening, for the last 10+ years, and no leaks have been recorded so far (note diesels, do not vent petrol ones). Note if you spill fuel into the filler area, it slowly drains behind rear wheel. If this is not what you think has happened, diagram of fuel tank is here, you can have a look for possible disconnection/leakage point.

I have brim filled all 4 of my Superbs, as dieselV6 above. Never had any leakage to date 11years+. Any overfill will drain down a small pipe from the filler area. I have on all my Superbs extended this drain pipe, this ensures that any fuel does not run down the inner wheel arch and cause smell. Once on my first vehicle the autocut off on the fuel pump failed and diesel that went down the overflow coated the inner wing covering, and stank for weeks that is why I extended the overflow pipe and again on all subsequent vehicles.

fuel tank concern /sorted,

traced the leak to the tank sender unit seal under rear seat.

sorted quickly by David Ian Skoda./ thanks.

Spectrum, you mention this drain. My Superb has what appears to be the drain to the right of the filler neck, at the lowest point in the filler neck surround plastic moulding. However, there is no hole.

Any ideas - has my moulding not been drilled properly or something? It fills up with water when washing the car, then runs down the the panel from the filler door.

Hole is probably choked by fuel gathering muck and forming a clot. Get a hold of some fine strimmer cord and gently feed it down the hole to clear it.

Sounds like your overflow is blocked it is very small diameter and washing can allow more water into the filler unit than the overflow can handle. I have seen overflows incorrectly positioned on Superbs and get kinked.

I have not seen one without the drain hole, Easy to check and rectify.
