VRS - Broken Intercooler, what are the options?

Featured Replies

My intercooler has leak between the casing and the radiator bit, and leaks boost at high engine loads. Its a 500 quid job, the part is at least 300.

The car is at 166k miles (04) and has been relatively expensive to run in terms of repairs.

I desperately need to keep the repair cost down, so what are the options?

Aftermarket?

Garage says they can't be fixed.

What about a scrap yard for a second hander?

something like this maybe?? says all is good no leaks so if it did turn out to be 'pregnant' then you could send it back .... may help keep costs down?

if you can find a breaker with a fabia then great...

as for aftermarket the front mount pipe kits are still expensive

Definately NOT a £500 job!

Piece of piddle to fit yourself!

My record for getting the front bumper off was under 3 minutes!

Go on darkside developments website they do a alloy side mount intercooler and pipe kit for £275 dude. Think Im going to go for that if I ever need one

I have sent u a pm m8 ;)

I've got one you can have for free if you cover the postage

Do it yourself mate easy job

I'd like to give this a go. Are you able to point me in the direction of a guide, picture, or description?

Thanks

For ease of access remove front bumper + drivers headlight using t25 torx screw driver/ socket. And theres 3 or 4 clips under the centre of the bumper.. u just push the centre out and flick the clip off to remove those making sure u dint loose the centre bits ;)

Take the drivers wheel arch liner out using T25 screwdriver..

Remove intercooler using a 10mm socket on a ratchet.

Remove MAP sensor plug from front of IC. Using ur fingers.

Reach under and using a small ish flat blade screwdriver release the clip for the lower pipe and remove.

Do the same for the upper pipe from the top (behind where the headlight would be).

Shud just fall off :)

Thanks, much appreciated. I may give this a go.

Are there any parts of the job that could be made difficult by rusty fixings/screws?

Once the intercooler is removed u will need to swap the map sensor over.. they can be stiff but shouldnt be too much of a problem :)

I used that guide first time I changed my intercooler and I'm a novice and found it to be very helpful.

Before this is fitted on Friday, should I get some replacement fixings beforehand, just in case some are broken during the work?

I'd rather not be held up just because of a clip or two?

Its all sorted. £85 for a second hand intercooler and fitting.

Dead pleased with having the power back and for saving a lot of money.
