Would people want to buy a 200k mile VRS?

Featured Replies

Subject to the outcome of my other thread, I'm intending to keep my 04 VRS in a year's time, by which time it would have done nearly 200k miles.

Providing that it worked well, would anyone (these days) be likely to take the risk on one at that mileage for more than banger money?

not sure but 200k is alot, it would put most ppl off, i would just keep it and run into into the ground see how many she does before giving up.

Yeah, at 200k it won't be the most desirable and wouldn't be worth too much... Assuming it still works well I would just keep it as a run a round or something :)

I sold a 2002 passat with over 220k on for £800.

We had a T reg V5 bora with 266,000 on it, I have to say it had a few squeaks and suspension knocks and rattles, I had welded patches on the exhaust in many places and the throttle body was a bit iffy (never let me down just ticked over fast) and all in it went like stink and got a thrashing on a regular basis!

I would buy an old car if it was cheap enough as cars don't really rot like cars of years ago, so by simply replacing worn parts it would be difficult to run a car into the ground.

Sounds like it'll be worth nothing in terms part ex. against a newer car.

The experience I'm having is when to decide not to replace parts. For example in recent times I had a new AC compressor fitted and now a leaking intercooler. Turbo was replaced, but I had no choice there.

anything at the right price will sell. if you have service history or recipts etc that will work in your favour

I was of the impression any part is cheaper than a new car, as you say though, get a few big cost parts and a newer car looks favourable, as the V5 is a bullet proof lump with no bells or whistles the Bora was all about electrics and bushes, I did a wheel bearing too. It was sold over 2 years ago and is still going as a minicab, so it must have loads of miles on it now.

In your case, if you have replaced the turbo and whatever else then you are already in a negative position so try and keep it going just based on secondhand parts from the scrap yard or such places.

In respect of your car, I am sure it will sell for a half decent amount, have a little faith.

People will buy anything if it's cheap enough.

Wow go to high mileage thread in here. Some people have tdi engines with 300k on the clock. Probs would be best to keep to be fair. My Vrs has 80k on the clock now and in planning on running it into the ground. Due to only covering around 8k a year I guess I'm going to get some years out of the old girl.

In my experience around 200k miles usually requires repairs to the top end. I have rebuilt top ends with new camshaft, followers etc & sometimes injector repairs to. This has been on cars with approx 200k miles!!

My car had done 163'000. they care drinks vertually no oil, but and engine seems fine. but the rest of the car is wearing out.

Think if it was a car with 200'000. miles then would need to consider who it had been driven and how it had been looked after. But this knowledge is not always obtainable prior to a purchase.

I'd say that peoples unwillingness to buy a 200k car applies equally to a 170k cat, they are well above most peoples comfortable limit

A lot of people will be put off, you still find that with 100k cars. If you price it fairly then it will sell. Heck I might even be interested ;)
