2.8 V6 buying advice

Featured Replies

Well it's been a while since I've been on here, rather stupidly last year I got rid of my wonderful 1.9 tdi Superb (only to my dad so it's gone to a good home) for a newer lower mileage Vectra diesel.......... I've learnt from my mistake! Never have I ploughed so much money into a car. Anyway that went in place of a van as I couldn't carry enough stock for my business.

Anyway, aside from my van I bought a S-type V8 for weekend running around etc, its awesome, but will struggle to get over 17mpg round the streets, and 200miles to £80 is bit of a waste of money. So I've decided to go back to the superb, more VFM than the A4 or Passat and better looking IMO. I'm looking toward the 1.8t or preferably the 2.8 V6, I'd of liked another diesel but trying to find something decent sub £3k is impossible, so need a bit of advice on the V6 petrol engine. Are there any common faults to be aware of? What's the cambelt change intervals, and what sort of price am I looking at? I'm looking at a manual, is there anyone else on here with a 2.8 manual if so what sort of MPG do you get, I'm not expecting diesel economy but getting more than 17mpg round the streets would be a bonus!

Thanks guys!

Try searching this section of the forums, should be plenty of help.

The only threads involving a 2.8 V6 petrol I can recall recently were started by a guy who lived in Dubai .... which kind of gives a clue to it's fuel economy

The guy from Dubai has a Tip-tronic, giving on average 19-20 mpg city and 27-28 mpg highway.

I've had a 2.8 V6 4Motion Passat from new in late May 2000, it has only done 86.5K miles and normally only gets used for long journeys. I now only use it to go to work on a Friday, so on a mixed 17 miles each way, I tend to get 28MPG in winter commuting and up to 34MPG in summer and long jouneys. Cambelt change period, I think that was it is an Audi designed engine, it was originally something like 6+years 70K miles - but what has become the "big VAG con" since the early failure of belts on the 1.9 DERV engines, I think that VAG sort off suggest the normal 4 years 60K miles - if only to remove any confusion and to help the dealers service department. Certainly I did get mine changed at 5 and 10 years - so that equated to 35/40K miles. They are extremely silky smooth quiet engines and deliver enough power torque/power for most situations.

It will run quite happily on "2 star", though the higher octane fuel with extra cleaners gives a bit more grunt and should keep/make it a bit cleaner.

I have an -04 Superb with the 2.8l engine and 5-speed manual. On the open road but with a very light foot on the accelerator, I can cruise at 110 km/h (70 mph) and get as low as 8l/100km (35 mpg) but that takes a LOT of self-control. If I give in to temptation and start going above 120 km/h (75 mph) fuel consumption goes up rapidly and I'm lucky if it stays under 10l/100km (28 mpg). In mixed city traffic with stop-and-go, I tend to average 11.5l/100km (25 mpg).

The car is a bit of a "stealth vehicle" as no-one expects V6 performance from a Skoda and the (single-side) exhaust is hidden behind the rear bumper, so I can surprise some of the Audi/BMW crowd at the traffic lights, but that COSTS fuel. It can easily drink at 40l/100 km (7 mpg) if I floor it...
