Ecu gone

Featured Replies

Basically had my 03 plate 62,000 miles Fabia vrs 6 months now and since last week been a non starter!! Done the usual suspects changed battery, glow plugs and have numerous mechanics look at with no luck, managed to tow it into garage and the problem is apparently ecu is gone! They offered to attempt a repair but was wondering what are my options if a repairs isn't possible??? New ecu and I'm looking at around £1200 plus labour! Any advice would be appreciated

what would worry me is why has it gone ? can anybody tell you why it has gone / what the prob with it is ?

It will need coding with immobiliser or the car won't run though, so you will need VCDS and immobiliser code, or I think you need something like vagtacho to be able to extract the code from the immobiliser.

Talk to Andrew at Blacksmoke (as above Ebay item), he may be able to supply a mapped swap-out ECU. ECU's are generally coded to the car/instruments so don't suggest just buying one without full understanding of implications.

May be also worth a VagCom scan if not already carried out.

So you don't have an immobiliser anymore which could be an insurance issue.

it also says if you send the immobiliser code the it can be activated for the new ecu

But if you have a later car, or a previous owner was a bit careless, you may not have the code and you will need someone with the right tools to extract it. I'm not sure if the dealers can actually access the SKC anymore or whether it is all done over the internet from the factory when the dealer plugs their equipment into the car.

VAG dealers have no SKC access and haven't for quite a while. If you want *your* ECU repaired I'd suggest BBE Reman is your best bet, it's what they do and they do it well but they aren't always cheap. You could have it repaired or swap it out cheaply but as Holmesie says you have to question how it failed. ECU failure rates are generally very low, it's not unheard of but it seems unusual. Have you plugged in VCDS and actually tried to connect to the ECU? Is it totally dead or giving any controller/diagnostic info/output at all?

An Indy was able to code a new ecu to my golf 1.9tdi using a snap on tool I think. Not really sure, don't think he spoke to vw though.

Still got the ecu somewhere too

Id buy that blacksmoke one at the price!

If the immobiliser thing bugs you, you can always place a sneaky kill switch somewhere

Shark may also be to sort you out with a second hand ecu, think it's also possible for them to supply one with the immobiliser removed

Hi mate i had exactly the same thing happen to me last year! Speak to these http://nytrixtuning.co.uk/ . It's member on here called Bondi. I basically sent him my old ECU. Paid him £150 and he copied it onto a 2nd hand one. Posted both back to me. I re-fitted the new one and it worked like a dream. Couldnt have hoped for better customer service. After having my car off the road for a month i got my ECUs within 2 days of sending my broken one.
