Programming key

Featured Replies

Hi, i have a Fabia W reg, but only one key. I have the 4 digit key code and wondered who in Suffolk i could go to to get the programming done. Skoda wanted a fortune to do this and wondered if anyone knew someone who could do this at a reasonable price.

Cheers

where are you located?

Key can be cut by almost anyone including the guy on eBay who does it from a photo. The transponder can be cloned by anyone with the right kit or better yet the old one removed and the new one added by anyone with VCDS if you have the SKC. If you have central locking you can code in the remote yourself following the process that (should) be in the manual.

that's incorrect, the id48 transponder that the Fabia uses cannot be cloned. It has to be programmed diagnostically using the SKC with something either like VCDS, VAG Commander or specialist key programming equipment such as Advanced Diagnostics MVP or AD100

Not according to the guy I know who does key coding, mileage correction and auto security for a living, I've seen it demo'd on a ford? key along with the VAG IMO defeat OBD module on my car, that wasn't a good feeling!

as i stated above you can't clone an id48 transponder. You said you watched him demo cloning a Ford key. Ford don't even use id48. They use either 4C, 4D id60 & 4D id63 depending on model & year of car. I didn't say that all transponders aren't cloneable. Ford transponders can be cloned using TPX transponders

I asked around and found I couldn't get it coded, the best option was to have one cut from a photo and then get the dealer to code it, think they charge about 50 quid, not too bad when you have look at the complexity.

Where are you located? I'm currently working in Holton/Halesworth and I have VCDS if you want to try programming a key.

I'm sure dealers charge more than £50. you need the SKC to code with VCDS.

Hmm

I want to get a second key for my Fabia. I only have one of these:

I've found a local mobile locksmith who will supply, cut and program a (non remote) key for £65, or £45 if I supply the key.

Does that sound legit?

I don't have anything other than one working key. No codes, no tags etc.

£65 seems a little bit much for just a manual none remote key. Shouldn't be any more than £50 if he's local. Blank keys & transponders aren't that expensive

I got a quote from skoda yesterday for a replacement key.

£117 for the key

£47 for it connecting to the car

Local auto locksmith quoted £150 for the same.

£150 is expensive for a local locksmith. What type of key do you have? 2 or 3 button remote?

3 button

I only have one key at the moment and would like a spare.

I asked for a price for a key that would exactly what my current key does, open/close, start/stop.

ok, £150 is still expensive for somebody that's local imho

Totally agree! I didn't take him up on it, £150 is too much just for a spare key.

Out of interest what price would you expect to pay? And what alternative/cheaper ways of getting a spare key are there?

I only ask because you seem pretty clued up :)

If they're local to you then no more than £100. If you find somebody that's a bit further away then a little bit more. When it comes ti keys then yes I do know a fair bit

Local, lol I could walk to this guys place in under 5 mins.

Gonna try a few more places tomorrow, £100 seems reasonable.

I was talking to a bloke yesterday. He was saying he'd dropped his Renault key card the day before & since then it wouldn't start the car. He phoned somebody who was about 15mins from him & the guy said it was £100 for him to do a diagnostic. Then if it needed a new key card it was another £180!

Said he ended up paying somebody else from a different area £150 as he agreed it would be the key card so no need to do a diagnostic. £100 for a diag is a right rip off

Interesting, I'd actually gone to him about mileage correction on a set of clocks for a GSXR that I was rebuilding but we got talking about cars and he was doing a Ford key at the time so showed me and said this bit if kit was new and could do VAG as well which had been impossible to clone till then. At the time the Leon had come with a standard key and I was converting it over to flip (blade cut from photo, PCB from my Octavia, transponder from existing key) but I was concerned about damaging the transponder when removing it. As it turned out a blow torch, hot blade and nail varnish remover worked perfectly.

There's tools such as zedbull & ad900 pro that can clone various transponders, some of which are VAG id33, id42 & id44. I'm 100% sure there isn't anything on the market that's capable of cloning id48.

The above tools can be used for precoding CANBUS id48, or is other words preparing dealer keys that can then be programmed to the car using the SKC.

For example of you have an Advanced Diagnostics AD100/MPV Pro & a AD900 Pro you can read the 14 bytes of precode data(CS, component security) which you can then program into a CANBUS id48 using the AD900 Pro. You then go back to the vehicle to program the precoded transponder with the SKC using the AD100/MVP Pro

Or there's Abrites VAG Commander which plugs into the OBD port & does all the precoding at the same time so no need for a separate machine like the AD900 Pro
