wheel bearing

Featured Replies

Hi there has been a loud hum for a few weeks from front of car, found out today its a wheel bearing, thing is I have to drive 300 miles tomorrow,is it safe?

I personally wouldn't risk it. I did about 300 miles with a loud rear bearing, and when it was replaced it was seized up and took some force to rotate.

I wouldn't want a front seizing on me, it would be like locking one front wheel at speed ......

^^^^ +1 like Andy you run a real risk of the bearing siezing and being it's on the front this could lead to a serious accident so personally I wouldn't risk it.

Thanks for the replies I am getting it changed on thursday,my mechanic thought it would be safe enough as there is no play in the wheel?

If it's very noisy it nackered. Lack of play is irrelevant. You shouldn't drive it all that way as said above.

Mine went, no discernable play but had collapsed according to the Skoda tech who replaced it. Change it ASAP!

Absolutely no play in my rear bearing either, but it was noticeably harder to spin the wheel by hand. The bearing was on the verge of seizing solid. Wise of you not to risk it.
