Good old Apple!

Featured Replies

Now Apple have changed the fitting to an 8 pin fitting on their newer devices (lightning or something its called) they are no longer compatible with the MDI lead. Adapters from the old 30 pin to the new 8 pin fitting are available on eBay but they don't support audio and I'm not 100% sure the genuine Apple adaptors (which are £25 btw) will work either as I've read on some sites that they don't support iPod out.

Does anyone know if an VW/Skoda MDI lead to this 8 pin lightning fitting is in the offing please? Can't see any on eBay for example.

I know I could use Bluetooth but that means disconnecting my phone if my son wants to play his iPod and anyway there is better control on the head unit with the MDI.

I also know perhaps the answer was for my son not to get the iPod5 or whatever it is called but it was his wages and he never listens to my reasoning any more, so its a bit late for that!!!

Cheers

Adam

I've read some stories on here and the 'net of the adapters working with MDI still.

Would be worth looking around to see what adapters they used before shelling out on the Apple (£25 -yikes!) one.

Thanks. I have read stories of it working with the £25 adaptor including one on here. Id rather a cheaper alternative though!!!

They do not need to work with Audio, only digital data. The MDI module reads the data from the iPhone and plays the audio. In theory any of the converters should work, although I would stick with the official one because the clones can be blocked by Apple in an iOS update.

Ok thanks.

Seems that the adapter works and, in your case (son wanting to play music only + your own phone using the bluetooth connection) might be suitable (if you don't mind the price!!!).

Quick heads up to others who want to use Iphone as a phone (shock/horror) & use MDI at the same time - review below says Iphone5 has a tendency to prioritise bluetooth connection:

Reason these adapters are so expensive is that they house a dedicated digital to analogue converter chip with 256mb onboard. Damn adapter has more RAM than my PC did in 2000 also probably better at converting video than that PC was too.
