Yes it is at the top of the side over gearbox. You can get a leak there when the temp sensor seal is weak or the actual hose / plastic pipe join is not good.

Another vote for the coolant sensor here too. Just done mine(again) as the previous Chinese ebay copy lasted 2 years only, and now the rough cold running issues have gone at last, which is a bonus. Lesson learned, genuine all the way in future.

is the temp sensor the green banded thing with a U shaped pin/clip holding it in place??

will I need to remove other bits to get at it and the hose and joiner etc

  • Author

It is yes, all you need to do is remove the 2 plasic covers(upper and lower) to gain access.

This will tell you all you need to know http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/244609-how-to-replace-coolant-temperature-sensor/ ;)

thanks for the help. unfortunately after letting the engine warm up and having a look leak doesn't seem to be coming from a perished O-ring as I hoped. looks to be leaking out from the junction just beside the sensor where a few coolant hoses join up. think it's a hard plastic unit, will investigate more shortly

Sounds like what I had, unclip the hoses and re-seat them and see if that fixes it. Note, you will lose water doing this so best when engine is cold

couldn't feel any tears in a hose or crack in the plastic joiner so maybe it's as u say. will see tomorrow. have some spare G20 or G40 whatever it is left over from changing T-stat

fairly sure the leak is coming from around the housing of the hard plastic joiner in the pic.where it meets the block

would there be a gasket between the joiner and the engine block?

gave the 2 nuts a small tighten but dont want to snap one off(did this before on sump)

if there is a gasket i doubt its ever been changed so could be the problem or there could be a small crack..didnt take it off yet as i dont have the coolant to replace what im going to loose

I've got a small leak around there but takes around 4 or 5 months before it brings the light on. Just can't find it lol.

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

bit of a mess down there tbh. I hadn't a clue where it was coming from till I took few bits outta the way. I've had it for a while but seems to be fairly piddlin out now. my temp light beeps at me everytime the engine is cold too :o

hoping its a gasket!!

edit..forget that I'm hoping it goes away of it's own accord and fixes the 'clunk' up front and the two dodgy door locks :)

I would be suspicious that it could be that plastic joiner connected to the head where sensor goes and hoses join to.

Seen these wear and cause a water loss.

If this is like the housing on a vw polo which has the temp sensor etc and pipe connections, I replaced the housing and it sorted it, It was about £25 from gsf, It has a rubbery gasket that detterated and leaked.

couldn't really see with all the crud down there now but I was thinking gasket between housing and block could be causing the leak. heading to Skoda garage tomorrow so they can pull it up on ETKA diagram

certainly sounds as you suggested thanks

  • Author

just back from Skoda. there is a sunken gasket between that joiner and block but ordered the housing too only €14.10

  • Author

when replacing the flange with sunken gasket should i be using gasket sealant too or ok on its own

  • Author

also is air locking a problem after replacing and if so any suggestions to fix thanks

  • Author

theres 2 nuts holding the flange on. bottom one also holds this little bracket which in turn are holding i think those 3 metal lines..are they fuel lines??

i cant seem to get tis bracket off without bending it outwards but dont want to damage anything further

was just reading threw manual and seems they might be oil lines going to a servo, bit beyond my pay grade :o

should i bash on bending or is there a more subtle approach im missing!? thats usually the case so im told!

ok new joiner on hoses back on too. do I need to bleed system now..

Id let it run with the expansion cap off for a while until the thermostat opens.

ok will try that thanks

ran it for about 15-20 mins. had to top up coolant straight away but fans didnt cut in. would it take longer for fans to cut in or could that be dodgy t-stat

Ive rarely seen the fans kick in on mine. Should be fine, drive it and monitor coolant level.
