Advice please, towing a caravan with Superb 4x4

Featured Replies

I tow a caravan and I'm very seriously considering swapping my 2011 Octy 2.0 tdi Lauren & klement for a superb elegance 4x4 2.0 TDI CR. Is there anyone out there with experience of caravan towing with the 4x4 diesel please? I'm almost convinced but not quite. Also what is the general opinion about the 4x4 diesel? is it as good as I think, (excellent) ;-) any advice or opinions greatfully received.

Thanks

Ray

Thanks for the reply, but those threads relate the petrol versions of the car, I have now edited my post to reflect that it is the diesel model I am looking at.

Thanks again though :-)

Hi Mate, I tow a 24ft 1490kg Elddis with my 170 4x4 and it tows a dream, that little bit of extra power makes pulling away and hills alot easier and to be honest I've never felt the 4x4 at work but then I've had no drama's whilst towing with this car so thats problably due to the system working without me realising! I bought the 4x4 as it was that bit heavier at 1557kg so took me under the 100% with the caravan although the max braked towing weight for this car is 2000kg! I have towed for many years so was quite happy to go close to the 100% as I wanted a car and not a chelsea tractor! The only downside with the 170 4x4 is fuel consumption, i'd say its 5-10 mpg less that a standard 2.0 140 on normal usage but when used for towing sensibly it is more or less the same, I bought a twin door as thats all I could afford and I love it and don't think its nowhere near as bad looking as some on here but if you can afford it i'd go for the combi as its that bit heavier a more versatile when on site ie packing up when wet.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, you have helped me plenty. Still going round in circles though lol 2wd or 4wd superb or not... my brain hurts ;-)

Cheers

I will take not take kindly to going back to a 2WD car since the 4x4 Superb is just better all round, whether it is towing , driving in poor conditions or just getting away from a junction in a hurry!. Sure it uses a little more fuel but it is not drastic.

4x4 is useful all year round.

Hi,

I cannot comment specifically on the 4x4, but I have been towing our Coachman Pastiche 460/2 (1420kg MPTLM) with a Superb Estate SE 170CR for the past 18 months. This has included trips in the UK and to the South of Spain and a long 'Tour de France'. I have found it the best towcar I have ever had - plenty of torque and power from the engine with good gear ratios for towing, and completely stable in all situations, including some pretty severe crosswinds. It has always got me (and the van) out of sticky fields, but I am sure the 4x4 will give even more confidence for this. Towing mpg always depends on wind direction and towing speeds and I tend not to hang around. The towing mpg shown on the trip computer has varied between 26 and 31, and this is about 5% optimistic when checked by brimming.

Solo mpg is 42-45 locally and 50+ on long trips.

The other great advantage of the Superb for caravanning is the sheer space in the estate. As we are two plus the dog, most of the caravanning clutter fits into plastic boxes placed in the enormous rear seat wells (weight central and low down) leaving the boot for the dog. If you open the ski hatch, you can also keep the occasional eye on the dog through the mirror!

I have an Octy 1.9tdi 4x4 and will be replacing it on Saturday with a Superb estate 2.0tdi 170bhp 4x4 and I can't wait. The Octy was good at towing so I sure the Superb will be even better.

Whilst the Caravan club rated the 1.8 petrol highly as a tow car you can't beat a Diesel for towing.

I have only towed once since we got our 170CR 4x4, and it's the best car I ever towed with bar none. And that includes a couple of Discovery Mk1s some years ago.

My previous towcar, a diesel auto, was fine, but if I really gave it juice to pull out smartly, it would just wheelspin, and the Superb just never did this.

I have a 4x4 170 twindoor on order, this model was chosen specifically as it seemed to be the best option for towing. Hoping to get delivery mid to end of May been quoted build week 19 or 20 I just hope it as good as all you guys day it is

Have had my 4x4 Twindoor 170 Elegance from new in March 2012. It's fabulous as a towcar. Have been caravanning for over 30 years and had many different caravans and towcars, this car is probably the best towcar I've ever had and that includes 3 big 4x4 SUVs.

Towing criteria for me when buying a towcar are:

Effortless power with loads of torque.

Stability in all conditions

Suitable car/van weight ratios

Nice to drive both when towing and solo

Loads of luggage space

Reasonable economy when towing

Good brakes

Reliability

Value for money

In the last 12 months since buying the Suoerb I have towed through the UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium to the tune of well over 2000 miles. Not one single problem - average mpg towing 25 - average solo 42 (47 mpg on long runs at 120kmp on Autoroutes with cruise control on).

Is it a good towcar? What do you think? Having usually bought Volvos, Mercs, VW I never thought I'd buy a Skoda. Best motoring decision I ever made

Hope this helps anyone considering a Superb 4x4 170. My Twindoor is the bees knees!

In the past 3 years I have towed a 1400kg caravan in the region of 4000 miles with this car. It has been all over the British Isles and Northern France. It has performed faultlessly in this time and has been a joy to tow with. Having towed with a wide range of vehicles I am a firm believer that in addition to the weight of the tow car, its lenght (wheelbase actually) is nearly as important. A large long car will tow more smoothly than a short 4wd. I think this is why the Superb is so good.

Now mine is only a front wheel drive, so I would expect the 4x4 to be better again, but for me the combination of DSG and 170bhp is more important. When there is a 170 4x4 DSG I will have a long hard look at my piggy bank.

Which ever model you go for I think you will find it an excellent tow car and will be impressed with its stability and smoothness.

ps Mine is usually 4 up with a boot full of awning and associated caravan stuff, and a couple of bikes on the roof.

I tow a Bailey Unicorn Almeria with the 4x4 140 DSG Combi at a 95% match. The Superb really is a top tow car, even though it is 'only' the 140 it copes easily with the van, admittedly not loaded to the gunnells, but we are usually 2 up with 3 springer spaniels in the boot. I certainly rate the Superb as a significantly better tow car than my previous Nissan Navara. Solid, stable and sure footed, with some power in reserve for when it is needed
