white smoke between 1500-2000 revs

Featured Replies

i have noticed i have been getting the odd puff of white smoke out the exhaust mainly in 3rd and 4th gear when just ploding along and the car goes between 1500-2000 revs then stops. sometimes it just looks like a normal car on a cold day and others its a nice plume of it. it doesnt always do it but is more than 50% of the time.

any thoughts on this guys. its a asz with hybrid but not mapped to suit, fmic, egr delete and elaphant mod.

anybody? car runs and sounds the same. doesnt do it in 5th or 6th only in 3rd and 4th and only when the revs have dropped down lower and going through 1.5-2k. get abit of smoke on start up, would the crank case seal cause this when it does smoke?

maybe the actuator isnt set correct and its not mapped to the new turbo?

ideas anyone?

I wouldn't worry. ;)

do you know why it is doing it?

No, but I know mine smokes, and I am not concerned, Diesels just do it, more so when they are fairly well tweaked. As long as the car drives OK I wouldn't worry until/if the symptoms get a lot worse.

its just that its white smoke that it alarmd me, i always assumed black smoke was caused when tuned or is that just on full chat as thats when mine gets black smoke

Mine spat out alot of white smoke and it was the actuator and stop screw that needed tweaking even though the logs looked perfect.

dean thought it may be that. planning to take it back soon for a mild map anyway. did yours smoke similar to what i said then?

Where is your elephant hose going to? Just hanging out, check its not blocked and can breath ok. More likely what was mentioned above tho about the actuator.

white smoke is un burnt / partially burnt diesel so if the actuator isnt adjusted properly and the turbo is a bit bigger than standard

i wouldnt worry about it until youve had your map etc tweaked

ok cheers. i was always under the impression black was unburnt diesel, white was oil and blue was water/oil mix.

blue - oil

white - raw diesel

black carbon / partially/poorly burnt diesel

this tells you more ...

Isn't white smoke just water?

^ I think you're getting confused with steam! :giggle:

white smoke can be oil, hot but not burnt as in leaking down the Exhaust, can be a sign of knackered turbo seals.

Note. I know petrol turbos well but know fa about diesels

As Stedee said, white smoke can also be oil that has gone directly into the exhaust system & is un burned.

Possible that the turbo seal on the exhaust side has a leak

turbo is only a couple months old so hopefully not, its under warrenty anyway i suppose.
