It all went wrong on my drive home

Featured Replies

Hello,

Drove home today after a day out and the car was suddenly running lumpy at idle, the epc light came on, it went into limp mode, the traction control light came on and the engine management light came on. I also lost proper use of my brakes on two occasions, the pedal was rock hard and I could barely brake. Any help would be appreciated! Just got the codes read:

1 Fault Found:

01314 - Engine Control Module

013 - Check DTC Memory - Intermittent

P1171 is throttle motor position sensor 2

P1542 is throttle motor position sensor 1

P1564 is Throttle control unit - voltage low during basic setting

P1297 is Turbocharger (TC)/throttle valve, hose connection - pressure loss

The first 3 codes relate to the throttle body, however a voltage problem could cause it as well. I'd check the fuse box on top of the battery for any signs of it overheating as it is a common problem on the MK1 and then proceed to check the underbonnet wiring and connections.

plus 1 for the melting fuse box causes alsorts of problems

This is the best I could do in the dark but looks ok to me - is this the right place?

Right place - check all that all the nuts are nipped up.

Also check your earth points, Bad earth can cause this type of random faults.

Cheers, will check my nuts are tight this evening! Regarding earth points, do I just follow the black wire from the battery or are there any others in particular?
