Question abaout rear view camera

Featured Replies

Hi.

I am looking for a rear view camera for my Skoda octavia combi ll facelift 2010.

I have looked at this.

http://www.hids4u.co.uk/integrated-rear-view-camera-for-volkswagen-skoda.html

Does it fits 110%? or do I have to cut the hole bigger like I have to with the original vw camera

http://www.car-multimedia.cz/en/original-rear-cameras/240-skoda-rear-camera-cabling-original.html

And what about the connector for trunk button, does that fit the wire on the car?

And the last question, what more do I need for it to work with my columbus?

I hope you guys can help me a little :-)

I've seen them, but will rather try to avoid them so I am free to mess with 2 different colored license plate light :-)

But I if the one from Hids4u dosent fit 110% without cutting in the trunk, then I will buy one of the cheap ones from Ebay :-)

I sent them an email a while back to confirm the size, they never replied

I have also tried to write to them now.

But it seems I have to buy one of them that replace the numberplate light.

But I still need to figure out how to get it connected to my columbus :-)

I phoned them up and they gave me the dimensions

97mm x 30mm

Eddie-NL: Thanks for calling them :-)

It will not work, my original tailgate button is 92mm x 35mm...

I will order one of them there replace the number plate light :-)

I must have been fortunate, they replied to my email quite quickly.

I too need to figure out the connection to the Columbus, so any info welcome.

Cheers Eddie-NL, just took a quick look. I'm really interested in the actual connections for a video cable to the back of the Columbus unit.

I haven't been able to find a decent diagram of the rear of this unit showing clearly what type of connectors are used for video input.

The other bits (running a cable from the camera, & hooking into a power line) are straight forward.

the vw camera use an RGB signal so in that guise you only need the Camera loom which plugs into the back of the Columbus or Amundsen+

All the other types use a standard video signal, to allow this to display on the Columbus you need a media box

Aftermarket Camera > media interface box > Columbus

Sorry Eddie-NL if I've misunderstood.

I'm looking at this camera for the boot catch http://www.hids4u.co...agen-skoda.html (don't fancy the licence plate light ones). Apparently (according to HIDS4U) it uses the standard yellow AV connection.

Are you saying that such a video cable would simply plug straight into the back of Columbus, or would it need something else?

if you are using the AV camera then you need a media box

OK thanks.

This link pretty much covers the HU end...

Thanks KBPhoto. I came across this... http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.php?productid=107&js=y which seems to fit the bill, though it's a bit more expensive than I'd hoped.

Guess I'll have to search harder, or save more...

That is the type of media box I mentionion in my post, there are cheaper versions

Yes, I'll have to look at a different version as, apart from price, this one requires the Columbus head unit to be opened up in order to connect it (warranty concerns here) :wonder:

This is the sheet Xcarlink sent me...

looks complicated, there is one on ebay for about £130

I have now received all the parts so I can install the rear view camera :-)

I purchased this media box because other people have used it with success.

http://www.kufatec.de/shop/en/Volkswagen/T5-Until-2009/Rear-View-Camera-Universal-Interface-Audi/VW

And here is a picture of the media box I received.

Then I have purchased this rear view camera.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CCD-SONY-CAR-REAR-VIEW-REVERSE-CAMERA-FOR-SKODA-OCTAVIA-TOUR-FABIA-ROOMSTER-/251031867101?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item3a72aa4edd

I have tried to draw a wiring diagram of how I would install it.

And here is the right installation guide for the media box I bought.

I will return when I tried to install it all :-)

This looks interesting. Seems they are out there, just need finding.

I'm amazed that Škoda haven't made provision for a simple after market plug-in job, or better still offered it as an option. With the screen already in place that seems the logical next step.

I think they have only introduced the cameras to the premium brands like Audi and VW

biggest issue is not to get the camera working but how to mount it. Only the cheap number plate ones from china can be fitted without cutting into the tailgate

The one I looked at is a direct replacement for the boot release, which I prefer.

Cameras from VW's will work, from cars like the Tiguan and Golf+. They have handle mounted cameras rather than the ones hidden behind the VW badge.

You might need to trim a very small piece from around the boot handle, but so what? It won't cause any issues and you'll wont be able to see it when the handle is refitted. You don't need an AV adapter with them either, the OEM VW cable just plugs straight into the 26 pin connector on the back of the Columbus.

There is thread on VW Navi forum where someone has fitted one and it works and looks 100%.

That's very interesting, could be the answer. Next stop searching for these cameras.

Would you have a link to that thread?

Cheers.
