Question abaout rear view camera

Featured Replies

Cameras from VW's will work, from cars like the Tiguan and Golf+. They have handle mounted cameras rather than the ones hidden behind the VW badge.

You might need to trim a very small piece from around the boot handle, but so what? It won't cause any issues and you'll wont be able to see it when the handle is refitted. You don't need an AV adapter with them either, the OEM VW cable just plugs straight into the 26 pin connector on the back of the Columbus.

There is thread on VW Navi forum where someone has fitted one and it works and looks 100%.

Although than can be made to fit, you need to cut a fair bit, from the measurements it is at least 10 mm in the width. The other problem is that the current handle is seated in a recessed groove so if you fit the Tiguan camera it is closer to the front edge.

Ah... That could be a problem. Maybe back the original camera idea (which seems to be an exact fit), with a less expensive interface.

Right, gone & done it!!

After much deliberation (& searching) I've now fitted a RVC, and I'm very pleased with the result.

The camera is a direct replacement for the boot release and is simplicity itself to fit. The hardest bit was routing the video cable down the hatchback & into the boot. It then connects to another cable which runs to the dashboard, and a power connection (I used the feed to the reverse lights).

The interface comes with a short harness, and a video lead (which connects to the lead from the camera). Again simple enough to fit, the hardest bit being where to mount the box. I mounted it, using foam and a wire tie, on the RH side of the cage which supports the Columbus, gaining access by removing the top cubby box. 3 wires connect to the quadlock, a plug goes into the empty connector on the rear of the head unit and a permanent 12v feed is taken from the fuse box.

All that's left then is coding (tnx here to Mike H).

Result... a good steady flickerless wide angle view, in colour and with guidelines!

Congratulations, tempted myself now...

Cheers Mike! Yeah, I reckon it was worth the effort to search out the right kit.

Oh... and "sorry" :giggle: but you'd only spend it on something....
