Quick VRS tyre question

Featured Replies

Should the VRS run a V-rated tyre or is a W-rated tyre fine too?

I have a nail through one of my Dunlops, already have a Conti Sportcontact on one side so now the winter wheels are coming off (hopefully this month!!) I thought I'd get the Dunlop repaired and keep as spare, and get another Conti for a matched axle pair. The price between a V and a W Sportcontact is nearly £40 though!

Believe the manufactures recommendation is the W rating, as we have from factory on the Monte (Dunlops).

TP

V Rated is 149 mph & W rated is 168 mph

A vRS is ok with a 'V rated tyre',

a 'W rated tyre' then, is more OK,

a ZR rated should be fine.

? I thought the post title and question was about a vRS tyres not a Monte.

.

Funny where a manufacturer makes a recommendation then put the cars out new from the factory with something different fitted.

eg ZR rated.

Mine where and are 84W XL

My new tyres are Continental sport contact 3 205/40 R17 84V

george.

Link is from Skoda Germany listing all approved rim and tyre sizes/specifications for all VW era Skoda Auto models. Monte uses same rim and tyre size/spec combo as the vRS despite only really needing an H rated tyre at best. Skoda UK have some catching up to do to offer customers such information.

Just trying to answer the op's question from the provided manufacturers information point of view.

The Dunlops I have are 84W. The Conti the dealer put on is a SC2 ZR XL so I've just matched that, know it's quite an old design now but bit geeky about axle pairings. Decent deal on at Blackcircles too with next MOT for £5, any MOT station, just register, send a copy of your certificate within 12 months and cost minus a £5 is transferred back. Two birds with one stone today as I have a car due MOT next month!

I am bit finicky about tyres. Problem is not the speed only but also the differences in the tyre design/lateral load characteristics between the two differently rated tyres. Has nothing to do with the max speed of the car :). Replace like for like and you have no problems. Change it and risk potential insurance/warranty problems. If you get written conformation from both Skoda UK and your insurer that the replacement tyres you want to use with different to original speed rating are OK then you have all bases covered and no cheeke insurance company will be able to refuse any payments due should it come to that. One thing to remeber that despite anything else going on above the tyres are the only things holding the whole shebang down on the road :)
