In car USB charger.

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone knew of a USB charger that can be connected directly/hard-wired to a 12V supply, not one that has to plug into a power supply/lighter socket that looks as OEMish as possible? Had a search on fleabay but they all seem to have to use the lighter socket. I'm willing to make small cuts here and there to fit it discreetly.

Anyone done this or got any ideas?

yep, that could work, top idea buddy :) Thanks

Nice idea. I've been thinking of adding a USB connector into one of the blank buttons next to the heated rear window and was originally thinking i'd just run my iPod from the golf box with the wire running to the blank button, then run a short wire from the connector to the stereo that can be removed when i park the car but i think the idea of having it connected up to the fuses as a charger instead is much better and saves me having to keep charging my phone through the cigarette socket and having the wire run up to the vents when using it for Sat Nav. Let me know how you get on with this.

yeah, will do, John. The idea is to supply the sat-nav with power via a USB port somewhere discreetly rather than use the lighter socket which, in my case, is far better suited to powering a lighter :D

Eeeeeexcellent... cheers Lee for asking, cheers others for replying. :D

I was wondering if it would be possible to utterly butcher a cigarette lighter charging unit..? Trying to keep mine as subtle as possible...

I've got a spare Skoda cigarette lighter from the centre console going spare (a few quid to cover a pint / postage and I'd be happy).

You could drill in hole in the glovebox or dash top box (for example), wire to a switched or permanent live (your choice) in tve fuseboard then plug this very discrete unit into the 12v socket / cigarette lighter: http://www.belkin.com/uk/null-Belkin/p/P-F8Z689

I have one and, apart from the green light, its almost unnoticeable in the car. I get mine new from eBay for a lot less than the RRP.

With this option you can choose to swap the single USB charger for whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted.

I've been looking for some option for a USB charger so that I could charge my PVR in car. Wife bought one of those electronic cigarettes cheap on a market,. I't rechargeable via USB and comes with a mains/USB & car /USB charger . Might be a cheap option -fit additional wiring and car ciggie socket / hardwire to car USB unit .

For those in Midlands ,she bought the items at Wellesbourne Satarday market ( If memory serves for less than £5)

Google for this:-

I've been looking for something similar to stop the wires trailing from the satnav on my windscreen to the cigarette lighter in the centre console.

Haven't bit the bullet yet, as I'm trying to find a suitable place to mount it on the right hand side of the dash.

Good luck

That's the kind of thing i want to do as well and would prefer the USB plug to be out on the dash somewhere, rather than in a glove box, so using one of the blank buttons next to the heated rear window seems the best route to do that as it will also allow a passenger to plug something in to be charged without having to either keep the glove box open or keep whatever they want charging in the glove box.

so using one of the blank buttons next to the heated rear window seems the best route to do

That's been done by someone on here already. Looks good.

I think there was a thread with pictures (and possibly part numbers).

Cheers, i'll have a hunt and post back here if i find it.

Come to think of it, it might have been a 3.5mm aux socket I was thinking of.

That might be why you can't find it! Sorry.

A USB socket would be good though if you could make it work.

Check out my reply just above yours, Grr666 did a USB one.

Thanks. Looks good (and illuminated...)

I'm not too fussed about having it illuminated as it will just be another light on the dash but i would prefer it wired into the fuses somehow, so maybe a piggy back off the cigarette lighter fuse would work??
