Fabia Classic 1.4 MPI "02" - hatchback - Temperature warning light.

Featured Replies

Hi Guys.. Newbie here... ( oh the joy )

Okay.. I bought Fabia Classic 1.4 mpi "02" as my first car... It seems to run fine.. but that's me what do I know about cars and engine stuff..

Anyway.. When I drive for about 10 min , I get the temperature warning light come up.. So I checked the cooling level , and I top it up. Same as Oil , water for windscreen , again. " The actual temperature gauge is at 50% let say ( you can see on the pic )

It keeps happening every time I drive... So any suggestion.. I thought it might be heating.. or not enough cooling... But what if its a sensor or something else..

Help would be appreciated...

Almost certainly the contacts on the sensor in the expansion tank are duff. Not cleanable. New expansion tank cheap, you cannot buy the sensor separately. This is on the assumption the level in the tank is normal.

^ Most likely I reckon, based on our experience

Thanks for the reply...

I have filled up the tank with coolant to the top... So if I replace the coolant tank , then it should work fine?

or am I miss understanding it?

Thanks

The expansion tank should not be filled to the top, there is a max marking on the side. If you fill to the top you will get coolant everywhere when the car is hot. Changing the expansion tank should fix your problem.

Yes , that's what I meant... I will buy one right away...

Is it okay still to drive? As I doubt i get by saturday?

Asmondien, where are you located? I bought an expansion tank from Eurocarparts hoping to change it over but didnt end up changing (got called into work as i was doing it) but still ended up flushing my system. So i have one sitting in my boot if you want it? Just send P+P and its yours.

It should be fine to drive, all that's happening is the car thinks the coolant level is low, as long as it's not you'll be fine :)

I m in Newcastle, Gateshead area...

and that would be great, saves me to fish about :p

How much would you like for P+P ?

It's fine to drive. I told my daughter to ignore the light for a month until she came home one weekend. Keep an eye on the water level just in case.

ECP on team valley is handy, I can point you in the direction of a decent MOT test station (they don't do mechanical work so don't have any interest in creating work for themselves) if you don't mind a short drive, same with a few decent factors and a local VAG dismantler if you need parts.

I have similar problem. Warning light comes on and beeps three times first thing in the morning. Changed expansion bottle and this cured it for about three weeks then came back. Temperature gauge climbs slowly to middle point indicating correct temparture. Checked:-

1. Water level - correct just below max mark

2. Fuses ontop of battery (which I understand includes radiator fan) all ok

Noticed the fan does not seem to come on after stopping car when warm but may just not be getting hot enough and the temperature guage is at normal.

When car warm and driven off the light usually disappears.

What should I check next or is it a trip to the garage?

Thanks for any help.
