swear filter is there for a reason

Too much play in the one you bought. There should only be a very slight movement, enough for a film of oil to pass round the shaft.

Yea that one you've bought is goosed, it would probably go bang in a short time if you were to fit that. And I'm surprised the top one worked at all in that state.

that broken stud could come really easily with mole grips or it could turn into an almighty ball ache and and need drilling out. Who knows.. It's pot luck

On the bright side, nowvat least you have enough parts there to make one working one from both the scrap turbos when you send off to have it reconditioned.

You can't just look and feel. You need to actually measure the play to know.

If it'll touch the housing, it needs rebuilt. If it won't touch the housing it's likely good but you need to measure with a dial gauge to be certain.

Of far greater concern is what looks like wear on the blade leading edges.

They both appear to be goosed looking at those. The one from ebay seems to have ingested something causing damage to the leading edge of the blades, and possibly caused the play that this is showing.

is this a joke!

if not it's fine. All my turbos ended up looking like that and I don't think you need to have all the studs in place or done up. :giggle:
