Advice needed. Think I have fallen for my first skoda! 1.9di fabia estate

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have come across a fabia estate. 02 reg.1.9di.

109k although the dealer wants £1.2k.

I know they were pretty slow and I don't mind that.

100 for a years tax and economy is what is tempting at the moment.

Is it too much? Is it good for more mileage?

Honest John gives great reviews apart from the roll bar issue.

Is it worth 1.2? Should I give a cheeky offer?

It's in a wonderful light vomit Green colour!

Offer a grand you might get lucky

Accept 1.2k but say you want a comprehensive service & MOT throwing in

It already has 12 months mot and tax until 31/7. Which is a good thing.

Is it good for more than 109k?

What was the difference between the sdi and the tdi pd?

SDI is a straight non turbo diesel and the TDI is a turbo diesel...

As to expected life, the PD lumps have been known to run into the hundreds of thousands if looked after properly :)

If well maintained they are good for far more than 109k. Has the cambelt and water pump been changed? What's the service history like? How many owners?

The difference between sdi and tdi is a turbo! + quicker acceleration etc but also more to go wrong! Good luck

Don't forget the SMF on the SDI and it can run on SVO/BD100 where as a PD (TDI) can't. 109k isn't much at all but check when the belt/pump are due, 60k OR 4 years, whatever comes first.

So does that mean I can technically run it if veg oil from the frying pan? Or do you need to do something to the oil first?

It's not quite that simple with WVO as you need to let it settle, filter it, then get the water out but yes it will run new SVO which is circa 90p/ltr without any significant modifications. When it gets cold you'll have to reduce the mix or use a small amount of petrol to thin it as the viscosity becomes a problem but please do your own research before you start down this route, it's a very economical engine anyway so unless you do a lot of miles it's probably not worth it for a minimal saving.

Exactly as Avalon says..........as long as we're talking about the SDI.....not TDI.

Hello,

I have a Fabia 1.9 tdi, it has 163'000. on the clock of which i have done nearly 130'000.

The engine drinks practically no oil at all. Suspension is getting a little worn and still on the original clutch.

Has the car your interested in got a full service history? You need to know when the cambelt was last changed. Regarding suspension, take it for a test drive and see how it feels.

Saw a SDI on sale once with 400k on the clock.

That should give you an idea.

They are noisy, slow and completely charming.

We loved ours and it gave us 4 years of faultless service.

Never ever let us down.

Fewer things to go wrong than on a TDI (Had one of them too kind of...)

Cheap tax if you buy a slightly later one with emissions info on the V5.

Older ones are at the standard tax rate for a 1.9. (Pre march 1 2001)

So no older than a 51 and you'll be fine with regards to tax.

Excellent fuel economy is this cars party piece.

Apparently the car has had the cam belt changed. The dealer is checking now for me.

Sadly I am in Swindon and the car is in Sandhurst and I have to go away this weekend now!

Oh what to do!

Here it is here. From what I can tell this dealer has been going since December so no history.

There also seems to be a bit missing from the front of the car. Maybe it was towed at some stage?

Does look like a panel/grill is meant to be there. Maybe ask them why? Or knock them down

Yes, the missing bit is the cover for the front towing eye hole.

Check the towing eye is in with the jack in the boot.....it screws into the above hole. Maybe the missing trim will be in there with it...if not, you could get a replacement at a scrapyard fairly easily.

You don't see many Fabias in that colour!

Sandhurst is up the road from me. Quit easy to get to from Swindon. Straight down M4, come of at Wokingham.

Never seen that colour before! Being classic, i think it will not have mini computor to give you average MPG.

Sadly not enough time in the day to go today. Let's hope it's there tomorrow.

Mother in law is in Farnborough so might take wide as well.

Well I have a confession to make. I went to look at this car today. It is terrible. The clutch has gone and the car is in generally poor condition with a large dent in the passengers door. The "full service history" stops at 73k but it was still argued that it was a full history despite not having had a service for over 40k! The belt had been changed but last done in 2007 at 60k- so needs doing again soon.

And the best bit was that I recognized the dealer from one of these dodgy car dealer programmes on the tv! I guess that it was karma for trying to pinch what seemed a bargain (admittedly it wasnt for me but for my bro in law who has got himself in trouble and needs a good cheap car) so I've ended up driving for over 3 hours for nothing!!

Oh I am so glad that I didn't go!

It's a shame that they're seems to be a huge amount rubbish out there.

I saw one car locally today. It had the engine light on and the airbag light on. And I got asked if I wanted the car!

I let them know why not and on leaving my hearing aids picked up the dealer saying to his mate that they should clear the warning lights off!

Oh. So don't fix it then!

Lots of SDI's about for that sort of money, take your time. I was tempted by a MK1 Octavia with 120k on the clock earlier, FSH (that's every 10k with a stamp and an invoice) decent pads/discs/tyres and as it's the non PD 90bhp TDI it'd run SVO for £650 with decent MOT but no tax. Only major fault was a window regulator needed replacing and it had a slight squeak on the suspension.

Then I remembered that the bike does 70mpg and it's more fun doing 100 miles a day on that :D

This place was really dodgy and the car was not good-a when I told the guy that the clutch was going he simply said " so you don't want it then?!" it also looked like it had overheated and the header tank was full of crap

I guess the best place is here to get a car!

Have a look on Gumtree, it's got some shockers but it does have some gems, 5 minutes on the phone and you can usually decide if it's worth looking at.
