replacement windscreen with emergency brake laser

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I need a new windscreen and I have the laser module. Has anyone else had there windscreen replaced and did it go ok? I noticed on the up forum there was talk of recaliberation?

I'm having a right nightmare auto glass can't reset the emergency brake so won't change the windscreen. Maybe something to consider for people weighing up the emergency brake as you will only get part of the windscreen cost paid via most insurers.

Im guessing this is the sensor for the city braking?

This has freaked me out a bit. We ordered the City Safe option for our car, then I did the usual thing and looked it up on the internet. Cue horror stories of unexpected braking when driving slowly round sharp left hand bends and a vehicle comes the other way. Then I read a copy of the owners hand book which gave similar prognostications of doom. Even the simple task of clearing ice from your windscreen was riddled with caution this, that and the other. Now I know that people don't change their windscreen on a weekly basis but clearly accidents happen and who takes the responsibility for the laser working again after a screen replacement? The screen supplier/ fitter, or Skoda, who may tell you that it won't work with the screen that has been fitted? Sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen. Given that not many people have died from a sub-20 mph crash I'm left wondering if this feature is really worth it at all?

Rant over, thank you for listening!! :D

Wife has city safe on her UP!. 6500 miles so far with no problems.

I would suggest you contact Skoda UK and ask the question outright ' does the Citysafe sensor need recalibrating if the windscreen is changed' that will stop all the speculation. As far as the insurance company not paying all the bill. You took a contract out with them and they knew the car you had (Did you declare the Citisafe option, I did to my insurance Co.) I take it they did not come back when you took out the insurance and say this will cost you over and above the windscreen excess? And finally If you dont get the citysafe calibrated (If it needs it) the cost of a claim if it did not work woud cost them a hell of a lot more?

Ok I asked the following question on the Skoda UK website today 'I have read somewhere that replacing a damaged windscreen on a Citigo which has the City safe option requires the city safe system to be recalibrated? is this correct and if so how much would it cost to carry out the recalibration?' Let us see what reply comes back

I have finally sorted it out. The correct procedure seems to be for the skoda dealer to disconnect unit whilst screen is being replaced and reset it when reconnected which makes sense. Another option is do not disconnect it and work around it hoping you dont knock the laser lenses or trap something between lens and glass (the autoglass option) I have had a quote from underwoods in Colchester who are my local dealer who will do the job for £230 all in surprisingly the glass is only £70

Seems over complicated and expensive to me. My insurance requires Autoglass to fit a replacement windscreen otherwise they limit the cost to £100.

Well the reply from Skoda UK is 'I have checked with ŠKODA Technical regarding the City safe on your ŠKODA Citigo. They have confirmed that it doesn't need to be recalibrated when the windscreen is replaced'. However it does not say if you need to remove the battery before disconnecting the sensor. Will ask that question tonight.

Thanks for following this up. Hope the information will never come in useful though

Finally got clarification from Skoda UK. All that is needed is to detach the Citisafe sensor from the wiring loom (Don't need to remove the cars battery). then remove it from the windscreen. fit new windscreen then fit City safe sensor and reconnect. Job done. So no reason for Autoglass or any other windscreen fitters to charge extra.

Sounds like a happy ending at least. I just hope someone tells Autoglass!! With any luck SUK will make it official and state this in the handbook.
