How high mileage would you buy?

Featured Replies

Hi

Been looking at Octavia's for a while and spotted this quite near me. It seems very cheap but does have 150,000 miles. So my question is should I even consider running this? And what problems am I likely to hit?

What's your expected annual mileage?

If its around the average of 12,000 miles I'd say there is another 5+ years in that car.

Are you sure the owner isn't already a member on here as it's been moddified (lowered and black grill)?

They are the visual mods, it may have been mapped too?

150K miles wouldn't worry me, had lots of cars with more than that in the past. My Audi is well past 183K miles and still drives like new.

If the car is genuine, the dealer will be able to put you in touch with the past owner, with whom you can verify its mileage and condition. If this isn't possible then I wouldn't pay a penny over "trade" for a car of that mileage and I would expect to have to replace quite a few bits and pieces that might eat into the saving from the price difference between low and high mileage cars.

I would get an AA/RAC inspection and a warranty.

I do agree with Silver1011 that you could get another 5 years from this car - but remember - there is always a reason for selling a car, just make sure you know what that was in this case!

Mileage is high, but its spent most of its life on the motorway, i would buy it for that price.

Thanks for your replies - interesting to see your views.

I'd expect to do around 7000 miles a year. Should I be worried about the turbo going?

Turbos can go at any mileage , it may ervern have gone already or it may go on for another 100K. Looks a nice car for the money, if you are worried look at the cost of a warranty

As has already been suggested a chat with the previous owner would be worthwhile if you have doubts

Lot of car for £2995,id be having a look at it & check its not a cat d at that price. Must be cheapest mk 2 vrs on sale. Its got maxidot too.

New rear wiper motor needed?

Check for decent service history and how well it drives.

As said above, service history is the key, if regularly serviced this looks to be a nice car.

Who does warranties for that sort of mileage?? might cost a bit for that, use the advice given scrutinise history, talk to previous keeper etc.

Have to agree if it is mostly motorway it should have alot of life left yet!

Yea agree, motorway miles are easy for a car, what they were really best for. I purchased an Octavia with 130k on it, sold it with 165k with no real problems in between. It was still on the original DMF and clutch!
