Recording xbox 360 gameplay

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This one is for my son, I haven't a clue what he needs!

He's looking to record his gameplay and upload onto youtube...

What do I need to purchase so he can, nothing too expensive please!

He has the xbox obvioulsy, and a PC

Thanks in advance...

I googled it and came up with a HD Video Capture card for the PC you can then plug the HDMI cable from the Xbox in and record away.

Issue is that they are £100+

Amazon however suggested this USB EZCap as an alternative for £15

PLug in the video cables from the xbox plug the USB in to the PC bingo bango juob done

Or of course he could tripod a digital video camera/phone of some description?

Depending on what your son plays, I think the likes of COD automatically record and save them to the hard drive.

Whether these can be uploaded straight to YouTube I don't know but I think my boy does this?

I could be completely wrong and have just made up a load of cobblers though

Capture cards. Most cheap ones run on the composite signal, most people use HDMI on their xboxes though and an HDMI capture card costs quite a bit. The USB ones aren't always suitable for realtime usage either unless they offer a passthrough (again, usually only on more expensive devices), they have a huge amount of latency between the device recieving a signal from the Xbox, them transferring it to the PC over USB and then the software drawing this to the computer screen. The latency can be alleviated by only recording low res footage. More expensive devices have both HDMI input and output. So as soon as the signal is recieved by the device they then transmit the image on the output to be used on a TV, this gets rid of the latency completely.

MOst usb based devices I see recommended by others cost upwards of £75. PCI based devices are usually superior but require fitting to a desktop PCs internal motherboard slots and do not work at all with laptops.

MW3 saves the game onto the hard drive and then you can edit it to a smaller size with different camera angles and upload onto YouTube via '360codMW3' or straight onto Facebook. I think there is a time issue though and it won't allow you to upload something over 1 min long when you do it through '360codMW3', not sure about the Facebook upload though.

This might give you some more info:

Black ops 2 records the game play too, which you can view, edit and upload afterwards. And you can also live stream it via YouTube- if it's this game he wants to record, obviously!

Yep thought it was Black Ops 2 that had this as well, knew I weren't going mad!

Right I'm off home to view my kill cams

I wasn't too sure about BO2 as i haven't forked out to buy it yet. :D

DO NOT use an EasyCap/EZCap device, they are just utter PONY. Fine if you have a beast of a machine to hang it off, but if you're using a component feed, then it records in 640x480 and looses audio sync very easily. Try a Dazzle, much better for not a whole lot more.

There are HDMI capture cards available for desktop PCs from China for about the 80 quid mark; I'm messing with one of those at the moment to see what the results are like.

I'm gonna be a proper saddo and do another thread with my gamertag in for xbox lol so if anyone cares to join me- nppulse90..

It doesn't look anywhere near as good as MW3.

Would one of these be OK chaps?

Thanks for all the searching and replies too, much apprecaited...

I'm not sure if that's okay but the best bet it to probably Google search what you're thinking of buying and check out some of the gaming forums to see what they might suggest and follow some of the 'How To..' guides available and buy what they suggest.

Get your Gamertag on the link that John posted.

You've got your missus playing, fair dinkums, I just send mine upstairs to watch Eastenders.

Combat Axe - never got the hang of it. KAP 40 and Ballista with a bouncy betty for good measures.

Sorry about the thread high jack.

The roxio capture card works ok but doesnt have any passthrough functionality and only records from component cables rather than HDMI or composite.

Without a passthrough the xbox is only displaying the image on the computer, it wont be able to display on the PC. Sadly a USB connection isnt great for latency, dependant on the PC it can be anywhere upto 5 seconds lag between the xbox displaying an image and then the PC displaying it, for something like call of duty that would be unplayable. Any input you make on the controller you would see 5 seconds later on your PC screen. A fast PC with fullspeed USB ports and ideally a dedicated NVidia GPU (the roxio drivers use CUDA acceleration which is only available with NVidia GPU's, not intel integrated or AMD) will fare better. USB3 equipped machines can get it down to playable levels but most diehard recorders use a recorder with a passthrough.

On a recorder with passthrough you would connect the console to the screen recorder. Plug the screen recorder USB into the computer as with the roxio capture device. But on top of that there would be an HDMI output on the recorder connected to the TV. On these recorders there is no latency but they are alot more expensive.

Seeming as everyone else is talking CoD. I don't see what the fuss is. CoD4 was awesome, as was world at war. MW2 was an ok game. MW3 and black ops just arent that good at all though. Black ops 2 I am not getting until I can get it for £10 or something.

I mostly play games on PC though, far better on PC than console IMO. Plus I dont need to buy a capture device, MSI afterburner or Fraps do the job fine on the machine with no extra hardware :D
