New Key + Crypto change

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had my bag nicked last night, which, amongst other things, contained my Car key and paperwork containing my home address. :wall:

Is it possible to get a new key and the code changed ?

Cheers

Zach

Yes, but you'll need to go to the dealer.

If you have a working key, then drive to the dealer and they can remove the stolen key from the cars ECU so it cannot be used to start the car or unlock the car with the remote. However the thief will still be able to unlock the car using the door lock, the only way around that is to replace all the locks. Maybe an idea to leave the car elsewhere until things are sorted.

Many thanks Manny

Some insurers will cover you for replacement keys/locks/programming. Some require you to notify them if car keys are stolen.

you don't need to go to the dealers. There's plenty of people out there that can help you. Such as auto locksmiths. They'll come to you & will be cheaper than going to the dealers. They will also delete any keys you don't have in your possession which will render the stolen keys totally useless, unless the thief has VAG key programming equipment then they can just get in the car with the blade & then program the key again

Now that is worst case scenario as i'd doubt they have VAG software, however if they have a key & your address details i'd also get the locks changed sharpish which isn't a major job. If they're anything like the other VAG i've done then the door barrels only take a few minutes to change. However with the VAG i've done so far you have to remove the steering wheel etc to be able to remove the ignition lock

Check your insurance - you may find that your insurance will cover the reprogramming and replacement locks for stolen keys. Worth checking both your car and home/house indusuranxe policies

As above the majority of home insurance covers replacing lost keys as it's in their interest.

Check you're policy ASAP

Thanks for the replies all.

I had the lost key removed from the ECU at a charge of ~£50

Replacement key + Remote comes in at ~50 each plus ~50 re-coding - with requirement of V5 + Driving licence and a up to 31 day wait.

what a PITA

Will check Insurance once I have worked out the full loss :(

31 day wait??? wow! they don't rush things do they
