New Engine Fitted...Car now pulls to the left?!

Featured Replies

So got my car back today after two days of the garage having it to fit a new engine due to oil consumption issues. Now my car seems to be pulling to the left which I assume is the tracking?!

Anyone know how the hell they have managed to do this whilst changing the engine??

I'm also guessing I won't be able to get them to correct it as they will say that I've done it since, typical...

Likely had to drop the whole subframe/consoles to get the engine in (might have got it out from below)

Did they not mention you will probably need a four wheel alignment check? Or at least get an alignment check done?

Didn't mention anything of that at all. You reckon it's the tracking then, and should I ask them to sort it?

I reckon it will need a full geometry check as they are likely to have dropped the whole subframe, so the subframe will need centering and then the toe and camber sorting.

Bit lax of them not to do it.

Just call them and tell them that following new engine the car pulls to the left and tell them to sort it out. After all you gave them the car which was not pulling to the left, didn't you?

That's regular customer approach.

Engine replacement always require front tracking done

I would hope they got tracking done if the subframe was dropped. If they didn't, it would sure be hell of an oversight. As a minimum I would expect a tracking check to be done using their own equipment, but I would double check it using someone like Protyre who for £30 I think will do a full laser 4 wheel alignment check and adjust it to factory spec whilst hooked up to the machine.

The Dealers are certainly not appearing to take the greatest of care when doing Engine replacements.

Did you get a new Cat fitted as part of the process?

& what have you got done,

a new replacement engine or a refurbished/reconditioned engine,

New Spark Plugs??

anything in the Service book, Mileage for future servicing etc or any special instructions from Skoda ?

Information on what or why there was need for a replacement engine!

Check that the wheels are on the Correct side and the directional tyres are going in the correct direction.

Please dip the Oil and tell us where the oil shows on the Dipstick as they did it from the engine replacement.

Thanks for all the replies, I shall be going back tomorrow morning.

George, I didn't get a new CAT fitted, should I have done?

I am told its a new engine, however they used the same spark plugs from my previous engine.

In the service book I have a stamp of the dealer detailing the work carried out and the mileage etc.

All the tyres are correct. I shall check the oil tonight/early hours when I finish work.

Just found this whilst searching the Internet;

"An engine that burns oil will usually foul the spark plugs. That, in turn will cause ignition misfire, higher emissions and likely damage the catalytic converter. Also, an engine that is burning oil usually won't pass an emissions test because of elevated hydrocarbon (HC) emissions".

Think I need to have words....

Sure do Mate.

My Monte pulled to the left from day one.

Told them & they had it in to do a full geo check.

Only a slight adjustment was made.

Pull still there.

So rebooked another appointment 4 weeks time......what!

Anyway dealer said allow two days.....just to make sure they get it right.

Words fail me sometimes.

It cracks me up when some people around here quote dealership techs (I am sure there good ones around as well) as be all end all, hilarious! What you found on the net is correct. What it doesn't mention is resulting deposits cause hit spots within combustion chamber ("eaten away" spark plugs, "false" detonation causing ECU to compensate lowering AFR and getting ignition out of whack , valves burning out, bores glazing, etc, etc). Find me a highly tuned race engine burning oil LOL. Cat if not changed simply creates flow restriction and fails emission tests.

Sounds to me like i need to be asking for a new cat and spark plugs then!

Its going in next week for geometry alignment so i shall have words then about the things mentioned above.

Again, thank you for everyones replies, all been very helpful.

Ben.

BTW, is pull when simply rolling or is it pull on acceleration (torque steer)?

Yeah its pulling when just rolling, veers to the left.

Must be that steering rack made of chocolate ;). But seriously, this would indicate tracking issue. You can check it yourself if you want.
