New Ad-aware SE Personal 1.6 available...

Hi

http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

I'm sure most will know that this new version (including freeware version) became available towards the end of May.

In case you are having difficulty loading from the Lavasoft site's recommended downloaders (there are only 2), try:

I normally try to find a mirror site in Australia, which might sound ludicrous, but they are usually less overloaded server-wise when new software versions are issued. When I downloaded mine on this occasion, I got the France connection first time (but don't tell M. Chirac).

As to the new version, it ran extremely noticeably quicker than the previous version

PS Don't forget to uninstall existing version. Ad-Aware has it's own program usually located as an icon in the Programs/Accessories location on your computer, rather than being accessible via their scanning screen menus.

Definitely it's a LOT quicker.

On a similar note, download.com has it mirrored too & you may wanna grab Spybot S&D's latest at the same time, it is also a fair bit quicker :)

And finally it has a "select all" option to quickly select all the objects found (you can still review them and select one-by-one if you want to).

The uninstall is a step in the installation process so you don't need to do it separately first.

You might be right, but they (Lavasoft) recommend uninstall and I have heard tell of others who's computer has crashed. I guess yer take yer chances on this one.

There's always been one? Or there has in the last few versions I've downloaded anyway. You could always right-click on any of the items found, and choose "Select all".

;)

Oh :o

Well it was pretty well concealed - I've always found it very frustrating clicking on each item individually... ho hum...

You might want to try microsofts antispyware beta. As good as Adaware is, there are lots of things that the microsoft one picks up that adaware doesn't. Also it's less likely that spyware companies will offer microsoft money to "not find" their software

I've got the MS one running on the lappie now, works pretty well and all :)

I have been pretty impressed with microsofts antispyware. It tells you what each thing it finds does and recommends actions for them.

whats better m$ one of this one? or run both?

Run both? Quite so, together with other programs which form your complete suite of protection. So I personally agree with you boyced.

Can I reiterate the wisdom of those who know that several programs are needed for reasonable cover - and even then there are no guarantees that something won't slip through. One program, however good, is designed for a specific purpose and several are needed in total.

Edit: "several" meaning: a firewall, an AV, a spyware blocker, a spyware detector (after the event), an email protector as necessary, possibly a registry monitor if you know what you're doing, etc... IOW not "several" of the same type.

I gather the inbuilt firewall on MS should work happily with a software firewall, but 2 software firewalls is a no-no (refer to WW VRS re on-line scanning).

PS to WW VRS - Your subsequent comment acknowledged (thanks) - hopefully any potential misinterpretation corrected now. End Edit

Mo

Exceptions to that rule are firewalls that are software based. Generally speaking (on windows, at least) having multiple firewalls will cause grief.

Also virus scanners which are 'on-access' dont tend to like being stacked. This is why I tend to run one in 'on-access' mode and do a second-level scan manually :)

I concur with running both adaware and m$ spyware. Always good to double up
