Cutting out on startup

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

New to this forum but hopefully someone can shed some light on my problem.

I have a 2000 reg Fabia, 1.4 mpi as my little run around and it has been running absolutely fine since I purchased it in October last year. I came to start it up on the weekend and for some reason it ticks over, the engine will start up, rev itself once but then die.

The symbol with the car and the key is illuminated on the dash, which I'm led to believe is something to do with the immobiliser.

Can anyone help, as to why this has suddenly happened? The car only has 33,000 miles on as well so I'm a bit confused.

Thanks,

Jack

I had this issue recently,i remained inside the car without opening any doors and locked, then unlocked the car and it started.

This leads on to my next question. The car has no central locking, and after i had prized open the key to see if anything had come loose I noticed that there is a hole in the middle where I think a battery should be? But should I have one if its not central locking?

Do you have another key you can try?

If you don't have central locking, the battery is just for the light. You don't need the battery for the immo to work.

Are you sure it doesn't have remote locking? That's the only think afaik that the battery in the fob is for?

I don't have another key unfortunately.

There isn't a battery in the key, just a hole where one could go. I guess this is just used a base for all keys and then a battery is placed in when needed on certain models. It definitely doesn't have central locking.

I've tried disconnecting the battery for an hour or so and that didn't work either. I am a bit miffed tbh as it has just happened over night.

anyone please?

Could either be the transponder in the key or the pickup sensor on the steering column, you'll need to get it investigated by someone who has VCDS or similar. Do you have the SKC code? You may be best off ringing your local mobile auto locksmith.

I have a 4-digit code that was in the owners manual, is this what you mean? It says to use it if the key gets scrambled or something. However, to type it in it says to turn the pin in the dash to the right (as if you were changing the clock) and then push it in. I tried this and a 4-digit screen did not come up for me to put my code in?

Turn ignition on

Press the reset (right) button whilst turning clock set (left) button clockwise - '0000' will be displayed in place of the trip mileage (under the total miles) - not in place of the clock.

Press the reset button to set the first digit.

Twist the clock set to select the next digit.

Press the reset (right) button whilst turning clock set (left) button clockwise to enter the code. If you've done it right the immo light will be lit.

Start car.

Thank you!

However, when you're saying 'press the reset (right) button whilst turning the clock set (left)' I only have one button:

How do i do it for my car? Or shall i twist the one button left and right accordingly?

Thanks

Yes. My instructions were for an Octy. Your button does the job of both buttons.

Start with the key out.

Put key in and turn the ignition on.

Simultaneously press and twist the knob clockwise - '0000' will be displayed in place of the trip mileage (under the total miles) - not in place of the clock.

Press the knob to set the digit.

Twist the knob to select the next digit.

When the complete code is entered, simultaneously press and twist the knob clockwise. If you've done it right the immo light will be lit.

Start car.

Nice one! Cheers mate, I appreciate it.

Once this code has been entered will it fix the problem or temporarily cure it?

It's an emergency procedure to get the car to a garage.

If the key is removed for more than 5 minutes, you will have to redo the procedure.

There is a longer timeout if you switch off but leave the key in the ignition.

If you keep getting the code wrong, there is a delay that starts at 10 minutes and gets longer with each failed attempt (max 255 minutes).
