Brake issues when wet........

Featured Replies

If its been raining and the roads are wet and theres a lot of surface water/spray, my brakes just dont work............put the foot on the brake peddle and nothing for at least 1-2 seconds then all of a sudden they bite.

Its a bit like back in the day when your riding your bike and you go through a puddle your brakes dont work for a bit till they have dried off a bit.

Any one else having this issue?

The brakes are just standard Octy vRS discs and pads, but wondering if a set of drilled and grooved discs will disperse the water off the discs better??

What type of pads have you got fitted?

I've just a standard setup on mine with mintex pads and I can't say I notice this problem at all

Not sure what the pads are as i havnt changed them. Only had the car a couple of months.

Id start with that and have a general look over the calipers/hoses/pipes and maybe swap out the fluid for new stuff. As I said there is nothing special fitted to my car and the brakes work fine wet or dry.

I have had this a few times. If you press the brake pedal then release it and try again you will find the brakes bite like normal. I have had it only when rain is fairly heavy and haven't used the brakes for a while or after going through standing water. It is water on the discs, not a great deal you can do about it apart from dabbing the brakes after going through standing water or every now and then when driving in heavy rain.

At least you are aware of it and can now do something about it to minimise the effects.

Yeah I get this when driving on the motorway in very heavy rain. If you haven't touched the brakes for a while a film of water builds up on the discs and it just takes a second for the brakes to bite. I find the problem very rare.

If yours is worse, then maybe you're missing the shields behind the discs or some of the plastic splash guards under the car. Can't think of much else. Standard alloys?

Wouldn't touch anything drilled or grooved personally.

18" Khans on mine. Il have a look for any shields missing. Iv never ever had this with any car before.

I appreciate that knowing about the problem helps, but that doesnt help when it comes to all these numpties on the A9 cutting you up..........

It's one of those things unfortunately, I have grooved and dimpled discs but I still get it in town with deep standing water, I notice it most just after washing the car. Have to say I've never had it at speed so maybe the grooves are doing their job.

Does sound like you might be missing some bits of plastic shielding or something though, best to have a look for the simple things first.

I recon it's all the salt mixed with water and creating a film on the discs, had the same thing happen the other day on the m62 and it's never done it before

Sent from my dad's old HTC Incredible S, not a dodgy s3!

Possably. Like iv said, iv only had the car a couple of months so have nothing to compare it to from last winter etc.

Think they went a bit ott with the salt this winter, never had my car go so white before

Totaly mate. Highland Council have been throwing it out the back of gritters like its going out of fashion.

You cant win. They either dont do it and its a nightmare, or they do it to much........iv got chunks of powder coating missing on my alloys after passing them going the opposite way!! And dont get me started on my bonnet.........

I've got the elegance model but I've never noticed this even when driving through torrential rainstorms with 30 feet visibility on the motorway nor after washing the car. I think the elegance alloy are more substantial so stop water going in and there should definitely be some sort of guard behind the disc. I don't know what its for but I guess its to stop water spray!
