Insurance: how do the rest of the world do it?

Featured Replies

It doesnt matter what system you choose it will allways be expensive. If it was your money that was covering some of the plonkers on the road? would you do it cheap. No thought not, perphaps a better way would be to not insure high risk drivers full stop. It would then be much cheaper for the carefull ones.

What would the comparative cost be if you were to insure your cars for people who have only just gained a valid licence? Presumably there is a significant saving if you don't do this?

Don't know TBH, although I would suspect it would increase the premium as you say. we were asked at the time if any "inexperienced" drivers would be driving the cars, my reply was "not as long as I have my strength they won't"

You're all right of course. Motor insurance in this country is a complete rip-off forced on the poor unsuspecting public by mega capitalists whose only desire is to make millions of £'s.

Now let me ask you a question (I'd run a poll if I could be bothered)

Imagine you are a Motor Insurer - say at Lloyds. You take in the premiums, settle any claims, pay your expenses and overheads and what's left over is yours to do what you like with. (Sex, drugs and Ferrarris seems likely)

Because you're not a greedy capitalist, you generously freely sell "Any Driver" policies so that in effect the car is covered, anyone can drive it.

So, (and these are the $64,000 Questions), when the parents of any one of the "stars" of Barely Legal Drivers come to you for a quote

a) Are you going to provide them with a quote?

B) If so, how much?

Remember all the arguments about how unfair premiums are for young drivers are etc. etc. etc. This is how you make all of your huge profits remember, by ripping off poor ickle kiddies who are all SUCH careful drivers.

So, come on all of you expert Underwriters YOU tell ME - what's a fair annual premium for an any driver, fully comp policy?

At the moment all of our premiums are going up - house, contents and car.

Because 2 years ago Christchurch had an earthquake which caused $billions in damage and the companies are trying to stay in business!

Basic insurance costs should be based on few basic factors. 3rd party should be the same for anybody as no matter if your drive a Ferrari or an old banged up Fiesta both are capable of killing or maiming a 3rd person in an accident.

1. Value of the car

3. How expensive are repairs

2. How likely is it going to be stolen

That is the basics premium sorted and should be rather high. Then if you are a responsible owner with good driving skills you will not be giving your car to be driven by tear away testosterone fuelled spotty teenagers or clueless princesses so your no-claims bonus can reach health 90%.

Simple system and works in man countries.

Insurance Companies do not make any money on premiums, this is noy how it works. They invest all that money into financial markets and derive their profits from there - so risk is on both sides. How likely are payouts and how well stock markets are performing.

The only people who make absolute fortune in UK on insurance are claims "lawyers" (litigation costs added £20 BILLION last year iirc) and repair garages on framework agreements with insurers. Prices they charge insurers would pop your eyes out - multiples of normal going rates. Insurers do not care as they simply dump the costs back at me and you...

I think you can drive a car on freign plates in UK for 12 months only unless you can prove you travel all the time or something, not sure.

BTW, I love your sig :D

We have something similar except its sex weeks for us. But since there are no borders, they cant check if the car left the country. And if it leaves the country, you can legally drive it for another six weeks.

As for my sig. Its a fine example of how the Swedish police operates. No logic and no common sense. I was once pulled over by heavily armed police when driving my sisters grey 2013 Mercedes A-class. They were looking for a black 2010 Mercedes B class. WTF? They don't have an intelligence test over here. Just a racist test, if you think all foreigners are criminals, you pass.

You have weeks designated for sex? :o

Mine is about €1050 ish fully comp with 10 years NCD. But that is a UK spec car with new value of €45k in the Netherlands, so I imagine that has attracted a bit more on premium. They ask some specific questions which include 'New price', 'weight', 'power', 'fuel tank capacity' and that's about it! Car insurance is for anyone to drive the vehicle as with many other countries. I cam drive anywhere in Europe and loads of other countries listed as covered all to fully comp inc Israel and Iran lol. Full breakdown cover for all countries is good but I removed it when I got the VRS as it was new and had it's own cover.

My car policy has come down for the last 3 years a row, without changing provider

My has has also come down for the last 3 years, although this required a change of provider (but same cover).

Insurers, like any business, are in business to make money. A butcher, baker or candlestick maker will always try to charge as much as they think they can get away with. Clients either need to find a good broker or insurance go or do a bit of leg work if they don't want turned over.

Sex means six in Swedish. Don't blame your dirty mind on my mobile's stupid auto correct.

Slider, buying candles is compulaoey by law that last time I checked :). If You want to Drive a motor vehicle on public highways you have to pay, no choice here. There's also little choice of providers as there is only a handful of underwriters and the rest is just middlemen ... There was that thing about a chap "opting out" of the system based on some legal mumble jumble . He deregistered the car had no insurance and was driving as normal . Went to court of court after being stopped and I think he won. Problem is he will have to pay out for anything from his own pocket in the proverbial hits the fan.

I stand by my comments, particularly about doing the leg work - don't just accept your renewal quote, get comparisons and negotiate or you will be shafted.

I suspect personal injury claims might be pushing UK premiums up a lot as well, we were rear ended at a set of lights a few days ago, and now seem to be getting calls asking if we are "ok, or if we're suffering from any soreness/numbness". NO - I've told you 5 times before, now go away!

It's not even the insurance company but some solicitor working "on behalf" - ie the insurance has sold the details on to some ambulance chaser.

Grrr!

Thankfully I'm old and ugly enough not to have to worry too much about my premiums which are usually about £300/yr fully comp, no claims protection, hire car etc on the vRS but some of my friends kids are paying £2500/yr. I can understand why some people don't bother.

Before anyone worries - we weren't in the Skoda when we were hit so it's all good.

Absolutely, that goes without saying and applies to every purchase of any kind. Still, you cannot opt out really and you have to buy it...

That helps keep our premiums lower here. It's illegal to sue for personal injury. We have a government organisation called the ACC - Accident Compensation Corporation.

The vehicle registration has an ACC levy attached, as does car insurance, which funds them and covers any personal injury.

And ACC levy is much higher on bike rego than car.
