Suspension tuning

Featured Replies

I was talking to Josh_polo gti at the weekend (Chesterfield meet) and i was telling him I have decided to go for the Eibach springs with standard Dampers on my car as i want slightly stiffer handling.

Josh also suggested i fit spacers just on the rear wheels to widen the track slightly, giving a more planted rear end. Apparently quite a few people have done this on Ibiza's, Polo's...just wonderin if anyone has this setup on their Fabia and general opinions.

Do spacers come in a variety of sizes, if so which is suitable. I see eibach make 'pro spacers' and they are on JBS website.

Cheers

Andy

Up to you old boy, have to say though spacers have ever been on my agenda. Just noticed your not on the group buy, if you want the Eibachs get your name down, the more the merrier! See Briskoda promotions, Eibach springs

Name added :)

Just need to get an insurance quote, but unless they take the biscuit i should be fine

Looks like Josh's car in your sig?? :P

I've got 15mm Eibach spacers on the rear each side.

They do make the rear end more planted and more stabloe under heavy braking. Car generally feels more settled.

IMO its a good mod to do..

Josh's car looks very nice indeed. It's also interesting to see the standard fabia parked next to a mod'd one. Josh's looks more mean and evil!

I think the only problem with using spacers is you considerably shorten the life of the wheel bearings? Sur Jon or Josh can correct me if I'm talking cr@p ;) Personally, I'd go with the matching Eibach dampers too as they don't affect the ride quality, but are designed to work with the stiffer springs :D

Chris

I put some 20mm spacers on the rear of my Mk3 Ibiza. Mainly to fill the rear archs better, as the front end track was wider than the rear. They did make the back end feel more stable.

I might try some 10mm spacers on the rear of Fabia, but it feels a hell of a lot better with Eibach springs & dampers!

Wrong Jon I know ;) but yes, depending on where and how you drive, spacers will shorten the life of wheel bearings. Oh and don't forget some longer wheel bolts if you're going to do it :D

Would just getting wheels with a different offset cause the same problem as this?

Yes.

Nope, that is fine.

I know what you mean, parked next to mine it looks more aggressive. Maybe its the way the it is lower to the ground.

Its been a tough decision on what suspension to choose. The thing is I can't afford springs and dampers right now, i'm hopefully going back to uni to do a Masters course in october, so i can either just get springs or leave it standard :(

Just hoping my oem dampers dont pack up

Nope, that is fine.

Disagree. It's effectively the same as adding spacers.

Ah but is it?;)

You are moving the rotational mass of the wheel beyond where it would be normally. Most people changing offset do so because they are going for a wider wheel. Because of the wider wheel they are keeping the rotational mass in roughly the same place.

If you change the offset, you change the distance from the centreline of the wheel to the face of the hub. Thus, putting more load on the hub & bearing.

Admittedly, offset distances aren't that great & on a wider wheel than standard it won't make a great deal of difference.
