Yeti as a Tow car

i am looking into the idea of getting a Yeti and using it as a tow car.

any thoughts?

i was thinking of the 140 or 170 4x4 version?

Is it a 4x4 car or 2wd and the 4x4 kicks in when required?

What are you going to be towing?

The 4x4 versions send about 5% of the drive to the rear all the times and up to 50% when required.

Unlike older Haldex systems it will send more power to the back when required, it doesn't always wait for the wheels to slip at the front before it does this as it's torque sensing and responds automatically to driver inputs.

Here is mine: (170 4x4 mapped to 200bhp)

The limit on the 170 4x4 is 2000kg and what you plan to tow will be well under that.

I typically tow between 1800kg and 1400kg (above was around 1950kg) and it tows very well.

Remember the 170 has a bigger front brake set up than the 140.

It uses the same as the 1.8 petrol, which is the same 312mm brakes as the Octavia VRS.

Having a bit more torque and better brakes is a big plus when towing in my opinion, I'd go for the 170.

I tow a 1000kg caravan with a 110bhp 2wd Yeti SE with no problems and would expect the more powerful versions to be very capable.

Towing brings my fuel consumption down from 48mpg to nearer 37mpg but I'm happy with that.

For what it's worth, I don't tow, but when I was buying mine I bumped into a caravan club member who'd just bought at Yeti, after years of having Land & Range Rovers, he told me he'd been recommended the Yeti by a couple of members of his caravan club, and that since he'd had it he's had no problems at all towing his caravan with it.

I thought the 1.8 only had the same size brakes as the 140, with the 170 the only Yeti to get the 312 discs. I haven't seen one but I thought Yeti-Man needed to upgrade his discs.

Yeti is well balanced towing, I have towed 1570kg caravan, many cars on trailers and also a tipping trailer full of rubble (might have been a bit heavy)

Engine pulls very well with good low down torque (170 TDi)

This Audi weighed about 1300kg + the trailer and Yeti was easily a 3,000kg combo, travelled back from the highlands to St Helens at 65 ish and averaged 37 mpg, did not change from 6th gear all the way down the M74/M6.

My 140 4X4 wouldn't have towed all the way down M74 without changing down into 5th on the steepest sections. Now remapped so pleased to read that it now will be able to. :yes:

I find that 65mph (I know it is too fast) has the revs at optimum for towing, try and ascend a big hill any slower and you have to work the gears! Otherwise, keep the cruise on, sit back and relax, let the Yeti take the strain.

I found that 4th gear at 3000rpm and the little beastie felt like it would go up anything!

That equates to a fraction over 60mph.

I guess your Yeti pulls even better than mine Richard, your remap must make a huge difference, my Yeti will go better after tomorrow, new oil and filter and whatever else is part of the 75k service.

Yes, it builds the boost better and holds it all the way to the redline, where before it would start to pass it's peak as you explored the higher reaches of the rev counter.

My 170 TDi Yeti tows 1400Kg with ease, we caravan a lot (14 to 16 trips a year) and it copes with whatever you throw at it.

I know the feeling, I do change my car a bit too.

Now I have a very good commuting car the Yeti only really does towing and holidays.

But I like it so much I just can't part with it.

So I've just kept it too. :)

wow, great caravan I wonder though how yeti would manage hauling this in the mountains?

It's a 170bhp 4x4 Yeti that's 600kg under it's towing limit weight.

Quite easily I'd imagine. :)
