3 months with my 1.4 TSI

Featured Replies

I got my first skoda in December - 10 plate 1.4 S twin door with 50k miles. Switched from diesel C5. I had wanted a Superb since their launch in 2008 (especially for the cabin space - I am 6'5 so most cars leave little space for my kids sitting behind my seat - no problem in the skoda!).

I don't do huge mileage (approx 6k) so I was happy to give the petrol a go and, being only £7.5k, this was the only option I could justify to get in to a superb.

All I can say is I have been mighty impressed so far. I dealt with a couple of cosmetics (water in skoda badges, loose boot catch cover) on remaining warranty- but the car has run perfectly to date.

My only concern on acquisition was how efficiently it would run (particularly when loaded). We have had a trip up to lakes over Easter and the motorway run of 300 miles up there (inc 2 hours sat in congestion) plus 150 miles driving around lanes and mountain passes in lakes returned 45.4 mpg on computer and 45.3 mpg when tank refilled in advance of return trip. This was with 4 in car and boot of luggage.

Paying less per litre for the fuel and only doing 6k miles per year (plus chain in engine so no cost there hopefully ;-) ) I am very happy with its performance. The 1.4 engine is never going to provide the thrills of more powerful engines but it really is a great engine and more than sufficient for this car. Incredible really.

Very comfortable on the long run and the kids have not once asked me to move my seat forward!!!

The only comment I would add on consumption is I am trying to drive efficiently - not obsessively but gentle acceleration, changing up quickly and keeping motorway cruising at 68-70. I suspect the performance would be significantly impacted if you drove more aggressively. But why rush when you are in such a comfortable and welcoming cabin ;-)

good review and i also got the superb for the sheer cabin space and i'm a taxi driver so it helps to have the front passenger seat quite far back for old people with bad legs to swing there legs round into the car freely and still leave plenty of room behind for rear passengers and this was not the case in my old Octavia where the legroom was rubbish and it was lucky im only 5 FT 6" cause i need the drivers seat quite far forwards so it aided legroom in the octy, but the superb is brill for space and boot size and i think it is a brilliant car and don't know why i don't see more of them on the road

Can only echo what the OP has said. I bought my 2012MY 1.4 Tsi 'S' twindoor at the beginning of November 2012. It was 10 months old, had 14,100 miles on the odometer, and was originally owned by Skoda UK and sold by a Skoda dealer.

I paid a bit more than the OP (£10.5K effectively), and have been thrilled with what I got for my money. Extras over and above the basic 'S' spec. were dual-zone climate control, auto headlights, and a full size spare and jack kit.

Sounds like my driving style and that of the OP are very similar - smooth acceleration and smooth braking (the brake pads on my previous Mondeo lasted 70K miles on the back and 80K on the front)

A tank to tank average has never been below 40mpg, more typically 43mpg, and even just short around town running gives 37-38mpg. On some A-road journeys where HGV traffic has kept the speeds down to 50mph maximum, I have actually seen trip averages of 56 - 57 mpg. Like the OP, my average mpg displayed over a tankful is often within 0.1 or 0.2 mpg of the actual calculated consumption.

Yes, a very happy Skoda owner.

We've had ours for six weeks and were getting about 35-40mpg, mostly city driving but occassional blasts up and down the motorway getting closer to 50mpg. But with friends and cabbies having these, I've been in them for about two years and still surprised at the size and comfort of them.

I just keep going out to check for bird droppings and get them off quickly and have washed her three times already even though there is a very long lasting sealant on her.

Rossorunner, you should of popped into to Carlisle and I'd of giving her a wash while you were checking out the historic parts of the city.
