Looks like my A/C compressor is goosed

Featured Replies

My air con isnt working so I booked a mobile recharge service. Guy turned up and had a quick look before advising me that the centre screw on the compressor had come undone which would probably mean a new compressor.

The screw is out approx 5mm and will not tighten. The car is an 09 Diesel VRS CR with @ 60K on the clock

I would like to ask:

Is the pulley likely to come off if I drive it?

Are the pumps repairable or do I need to get it replaced.

Any recommendations to replace it @ the Basingstoke / N Hants area.

It has been serviced by independents so I guess a goodwill claim is out.

Aircon compressors are a known weak spot, loads of info on here about them,

You will need a new one, had mine changed last year £ 675 :-(

I was lucky the Dealer paid as it was still in warranty :-)

Thanks, anyone know if I will cause any damage still driving it?

Mines been goosed for over a year car runs fine. It's been mot and serviced by Skoda who reported it broken but I can't justify the money for a replacement so i live without it lol.

Thanks, anyone know if I will cause any damage still driving it?

If its still tightened up even though 5mm out it should be ok.

It wont tighten thats the problem, not sure waht the centre bolt is for .

Isn't it designed to shear off when the compressor seizes so that the belt doesn't jump off?

I expect thats exactly what its done. Happened to my MK6 Golf just a couple of months before turning 3 yrs old; it just freewheels and isnt actually turning the compressor (basically because its inards have siezed/smashed to pieces). I dont think you can really hear the clutch engaging on modern VAG AC systems but you can hear the fans and the compressor so when you turn the system on you'll notice no change as the compressor is not activating as so sparking the rest of the system into life.

I had to have a new compressor and reciever dryer installed, dealer had the car for a few days and god knows how much it would have cost to fix out of warranty....alot I should think as a compressor costs a good few hundred quid.
