Another 'which oil' thread (with ECP offer)

Featured Replies

At the moment Euro Car Parts are doing 25% off selected oils (same as Briskoda discount) and a free oil filter (saving £5) on 5 litres of selected Triple QX oils.

£25 instead of £40 for 5l and filter - can't be bad. All good so far.

I have a PD 140 (2007) on variable service and I want to do an interim oil change.

According to ECP, this Triple QX oil is right for my car.

My recent research suggests that I can use 507.00 oil (5w30), but as mine is an older car is this 505.01 suitable or just for fixed service intervals?

Triple QX probably isn't as good as Shell Helix (for example and only because that it what the sticker on my engine bay says should be in there), but if it meets the VAG specs, then it should be good enough for 6-8 months.

But at almost half the price...

Any thoughts on this theory as well as the grade of oil?

I can see why there are so many threads about 'Which oil?' - almost as many as 'Which tyre?' threads...

There was some Fuchs Titan on eBay for £20 for 5 litres the other day in 507.00 spec. Might be worth a look.

505 is a fixed service oil.

Honestly in my book for an extra few quid don't skimp on the oil. I'll say it once I'll say it again, look after your car and it will keep on going.

Even the shell is on the offer.....its what I'm getting.

As said, that one you've linked to meets the 505 standard, so isn't for use on variable servicing, which needs to meet the 507 standard. TBH most of the diesel engine oil for VAG TDi engines I find are suitable for both fixed (505) and variable (507) servicing, so it's not difficult to find one that's suitable.

Oddly I can't see a 'Triple QX' oil on there that meets 507, unless I've missed it? I find that odd, but then I've never used their stuff before.

I've been using the 507 spec stuff for quite a few years, despite me always being on fixed and it exceeding that standard.

Next question will be which oil filter to choose, from ECP page :)

That's easy: the three for my car are all the same size! So choose the best quality one...

Thanks for all your comments.

505 is a fixed service oil.

My manual says that 505.01 is for diesel engines without DPF (which mine is) but fixed service intervals (QG0 or QG2) and that 506.01 is for diesel engines on variable service intervals without DPF.

It does mention 507 spec on both fixed and variable service intervals, but (and it does not clarify this) suggests that this would be for fixed service intervals. (Pages 250-251 of my manual).

Now just to confuse things - I go onto the Shell LubeMatch site and put in my details (including QG1) and it comes back with either Helix Ultra AV-L 5W-30 or Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 both of which are VAG approved 504 or 507 spec, neither are 506...

It's also not totally clear whether the first one is for cars with DPF or that the second would be needed if there was no DPF.

So, even RTFM doesn't help that much...

Should I play safe and go for a 507 / 5W-30 oil? Or keep looking for a decent 506 oil?

Go for 507 spec.

Did you get sorted? Offer ends tomorrow :)

This additional info might help on the spec question:

]VW 505.01[/b]

VW 505.01 specification. These oils are especially for "Pumpe-Düse" (unit injector or "PD" engines) running on fixed service intervals (15,000km / 12 months).

It is vitally important to use an oil meeting either this, the VW 506.01 specification or the VW 507.00 specification to avoid damaging the diesel pump in PD engines.

For PD engined cars with a DPF, use only an oil meeting the VW 507.00 specification.

This is from Opie Oil's website, who I would trust implicitly.

Basically, 505 if you are on fixed intervals without a DPF, 507 if you are on variable servicing OR on fixed with a DPF. 507 also exceeds the 505 spec, so you can use it instead of 505. That's what I've been doing for some time, as mentioned. 506 doesn't really come into the discussion, as I haven't seen that standard listed on oils for quite a while.

Thanks for the info.

It pretty much sums up the conclusion I came to: 506 doesn't really exist (or at least it's not readily available) and going for 507 is the 'safer' and more convenient option.

Haven't ordered as yet. I've had a lot on my plate. But think I'll be looking at branded oils in the supermarkets as Asda had 5 litres of most Castrol oils for £20 IIRC.

Fair enough. Just check the spec on the supermarket Castrol as I've seen the deal offers only include 'standard' synth/semi-synth and not VAG standard.

Thought the ECP offer including the filter and delivery was pretty good. I've used that Halfords example before, I have it in now actually! Even better at trade price, but unless it's on offer it can be a bit expensive for the 'walk-in' customer.
