Aircon stopped working :-(

Featured Replies

So having been bumped by a lorry and had various other mishaps, my air conditioning has now decided to pack up....just as we get the first bit of warm weather!

Anyway, from poking around on here and various other places online, it seems more than likely that the compressor has died. Whoopee-flippin-doo

So my questions are:

1) what's the best/easiest way to confirm it is definitely the compressor that's failed? I've seen the following procedure that does a reset:

Ignition on, but engine NOT running.

Hold down ECON and bottom left of 4 oblong buttons for airflow.

Display changes, you'll hear loads of clicking.

Once clicking stops, display changes back to normal.

Repeat if necessary.

Climatronic should now be calibrated.

...but I'd imagine that if it's the compressor, then this won't make any difference?

2) if it defo is the compressor, is this part going to fit the bill: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3f2360de24

And anyone got any idea roughly how much it would cost to get it fitted?

Thanks

If you are unsure about what's wrong, take the car in and spend the (potentially) extra money to have them troubleshoot, order parts and perform the repair. Professional shops don't like it when you "meddle in their affairs" and bring your own parts. Especially if you brought the wrong parts. :)

If you plan on doing the repair yourself, go ahead and buy from ebay.

And if you replace a compressor the system needs a full flush and you also need to replace the receiver/dryer I believe.

You can work out with VCDS if the compressor is kaput.

I'm pretty sure there in an option in the clinatronic section where youn press the ECON and bottom too right button and use the far left know to scroll through readings. I'm sure one of the readings in the compressor RPM. Must find this thread...it's on here somewhere.

I get a reading in VCDS for the compressor speed but it doesn't do anything.

If its reading 00 it can't be turning over. The RPM should be reading about 30? In could be wrong. Mine also reads 00 and the compressor is goosed that was confined during last service. It's getting replaced in a few weeks under warranty

The compressor in my car is knackered (as confirmed by the dealer on Thursday). It is rotating but not actually compressing anything.

When I looked at the various measuring blocks in vcds I can see it is spinning as the ECU is asking it to but the evaporator temperature doesn't drop and neither does the temperature of the air coming out of the vents. It is registering plenty of pressure in the system too.

From memory I think mine registered about 1,000rpm when the engine was idling, but I might be wrong. The problem is that the innards of the compressor fail so that it spins but doesn't work. If your compressor isn't turning then there should be a fault code logged and presumably the pulley is spinning but the axle of the compressor isn't, or the aux belt isn't attached anymore, but then the dash should light up like a Christmas tree!

I've no idea what's wrong with it. It wet balls up after the timing belt was replaced so i blamed blamed Skoda but 6 months before I've had the time to book it in lol. Takes a lifetime to dentist windows without it. Never mind that the cold air is not that cold.

Something I discovered recently is that a reading of 00 RPM doesn't necessarily mean the compressor is dead.

Mine was reading 00, had logged a fault code for low refrigerant and the aircon was basically doing nothing. I assumed the worst, but thought a re-gas at Kwik Fit for £29 was worth a try before definitely condemning the compressor. Surprisingly it worked! The aircon is back working fine again, and showing an RPM reading in VCDS. Obviously there must be a slow leak somewhere, (condenser possibly) but at least it shows a 00 reading isn't always terminal for the compressor.

I would that if the compressor isn't turning then that would indicate that the fault lies elsewhere, if it is turning but not doing anything then that suggests the compressor is dead, I would find someone with VCDS to scan the car for you.

Lol, "Window dentistry"

i thought that on these the AC compressor spins all the time and the actual compression is regulated by a swash plate internal to the unit not by having an electromagnet clutch on the front and you will need to take it to a garge anyway for safe gas removal as 1 its illegal to release refrigerant knowingly in and 2 its is much safer to have a qualified guy done as the refrigerant can cause sever frostbite

Hahaha demist. Stupid auto correct.

After replacing the leaking condenser on my Octavia the a/c worked until I got Skoda to replace the cam belt , it hasn't worked since,
